Cuddy pulled her hair back in a loose ponytail before grabbing a towel from the shelf by the bathtub. She slipped her swim suit on and wrapped the towel around her waist before heading back into the bedroom to grab one last item ( Read more... )

The loud knock on the door jolted House out of a deep sleep. He cracked his eyes open and lifted his head from the pillow, glaring at the door when he heard Cuddy's voice. Yeah, he wanted - needed - his pills, but he certainly didn't appreciate having a schedule, especially a schedule arranged by someone else that he had to stick to ( ... )

Cuddy was about to knock again when House finally opened the door, looking less like he'd been sleeping than he'd been beaten into a stupor. She resisted the urge to reach out and smooth down his hair and settled for rolling her eyes. She didn't like being the guardian of his pills either...except for the peace of mind it gave her knowing that he wasn't--couldn't abuse the pills while she controlling them.

"Fine, you're not in. In that case, maybe your evil twin would like the Oxycontin." She simply stuck out her hand, pill in the palm. She dropped her eyes to the floor, biting at her lip. She didn't want to sever what might be the only lingering connection between them, but she also didn't want House to build up any more resentment toward her. What she really wanted was to know what the hell House was thinking or feeling about her but House discussing his feelings seemed less likely than escaping from the Hotel at this point.

"I can always let Wilson take over the pills," she said slowly.

House's eyes dropped to the pill and after he opened the door wider, he reached out to take it from Cuddy's hand - and then snapped his eyes back up to her at the suggestion of Wilson taking over in the pill dispensing department.

He took the pill just as slowly from her hand as she'd just made that suggestion. "Sure, you could let him," he began. He threw the pill into his mouth and swallowed it, then looked back to Cuddy. "But is that what you really want?"

It wasn't what House wanted. He could think of a number of good reasons to justify that, too - the fact that Wilson had spiralled into some kind of alcoholism, the fact that he and Wilson didn't talk much anymore... the fact that he and Wilson had slept together, a reason he wasn't about to let known to Cuddy. The fact that he wanted Cuddy, even though he'd been ignoring her...

He pushed aside his thoughts and, leaning his shoulder against the doorframe, he raised his brows at Cuddy, waiting for her response.

"No, it's not what I want, but since when is what I want high on your list of priorities?" she asked, unable to keep the sharp edge from her voice. It was a fair question--House rarely put anyone else's needs or wishes ahead of his own--but she should know better than to let it get to her this way. She did know better, but this thing that had been going on between them had weakened her defenses. It was too easy for him to get to her now.

"You're avoiding me, but you need your pills which makes it a little hard for you to avoid me," she said, keeping her voice low and even. She raised her eyes, meeting his gaze, because it really wasn't about the pills at all. "Figure out what you really want, House."
