As someone who likes running cons, as well as other people who like running cons, I might try to get to Conrunner 2008 - definitely less intimidating than one of the (largely US-based) SMOFcons (oops - gave away the secret.... ;-) )
Ye Gods, are there really cons for people who run cons???!!! That's like wanking on top of masturbation!(wankturbationcon?) What really worries me is how seriously you all take them, last time I heard of SMOF's I did a pisstake on the idea for our conbook, which may explain why all the litfans slagged off the con....

Well, yeah. People give each other advice on conrunning, including pitfalls to look for in hotel contracts, what tech is useful and what's a waste of money, and whatever else people want to talk about.
I'm on SMOFs (I mostly just lurk & learn), and sometimes it seems full of obsessive navelgazers and nitpickers, but it's an enormous source of knowledge and experience. I threw in a question earlier this year about what to do if the power goes out in a con hotel (a question inspired by Melbourne's blackout during the summer's bushfire), & got some really useful ideas to take back to the Australian Discworld Convention (held before the bushfires went out).

Yes, there are certainly both of those. There may even be some overlap between the two.
