I'm reading The Red Pony by John Steinbeck. Every page makes me cringe a little. That's because no matter how good things are going it seems something bad or heartbreaking is right around the corner. This kind of fiction is a little too real for me. I like happier endings so I hope it ends well. I don't have much hope though because Tortilla Flat

No, they're still excellent things to read just don't expect Steinbeck to blow sunshine up your butt. ;)

I think they're a good reality check. They're not "feel good" stories but they have great "feel good" moments. They stand out more poignantly against a hard world backdrop.
