Poverty is Love

1. Have you ever been too poor to afford smokes/drinks/food? Which was the first one to get cut? Of course I have! Drinks was the first to go (I'm assuming we're talking alcoholic), because well, I don't drink anymore, but even when I did, I still realized that food and smoking were more important to me. When it comes down to food vs. cigarettes, I always choose cigarettes. I can eat white rice with salt or Ramen.

2. What is the most pathetic situation you have been in due to lack of money? I don't even know where to start! There are so many to choose from, from using our stove as a heater to boiling water for baths (because natural gas around here is SO expensive), so I'll just pick the most recent pathetic situation. I have never in my life run out of gas in my car until about a year ago when I started to get really poor. About a month ago, my husband Damon and I were on our way to the freaking gas station to get cigarettes (notice we weren't going to get gas, lol!) and the car died about halfway to our destination. To make matters worse, it had been raining that day, and there were puddles in the road. This big truck whizzes by our car and my poor hubby gets drenched with water. Pretty bad, right? It gets better. We're sitting in the car trying to call Damon's brothers or my aunt to come pick us up, and we get a call from Damon's brother Sam asking us to pick him up because HE ran out of gas too. We realized at this point that we were completely fucked, so we decided to walk home. We had to walk through a corn field (no bullshit) and our shoes got all muddy, then we reached a more suburban area and it started to rain again. It wasn't just sprinkling, it was pissing and pouring outside. We were already feeling defeated, but the honks from people passing by in their cars did not help. By the time we reached our house, we were completely soaked. Luckily, we were able to laugh about it. We still recall this event and giggle until we cry.

3. What is the most creative thing you have done to get some extra cash? I don't know if it's creative, per se, but it's definitely the most time consuming. I once uploaded all of my c.d.'s to my hard drive so I could take them down to this used book/music store to get cash for them. It took forever to do, and I was only expecting like $20 for all of them (upwards of 100 c.d.'s). Luckily for me, I got $70 for about 50 of them. The rest they wouldn't take because they were soundtracks or too obscure to sell. Yay!

4. Have you ever been jealous of your pet for leading a better life than you? Oh definitely! We put our pets before ourselves in every situation. You know how the first Christmas you spend with your husband/wife is supposed to be all special and romantic? It wasn't for us because we had to spend so much money for Boomer's vet bills (she had parvo). We couldn't even afford to buy each other Christmas presents that year. Luckily, we were able to buy Christmas presents for the doggies though. I suppose that was Christmas enough for the both of us that year to see them all excited by their new clothes, toys and treats.

5. You find $100 on the street, what do you do with it? I'd love to say I'd return it, but I'd most definitely keep it. Then I'd buy a carton of cigarettes and some food. LOL!

6. If you could pass on one piece of advice about living life in poverty, what would it be? Don't hate being poor! It's actually quite fun if you have the right attitude. Plus, it makes you creative, and creativity pwns all.

7. Who is your favorite mod? cacophonesque, because I've known her for years and she's just so darn squishable.

8. Why are you elite? I'm not sure I'd call myself elite in most situations, but when it comes to being poor, I may have written the book on being elite. Not only am I a poor college kid, but I grew up poor. I could never get what I needed when I needed it. I always had to "wait until next payday". I think years of living in poverty while maintaining a positive attitude about it make me worth of la_pauvre_elite.

9. What is your favorite cheap and tasty recipe? Grilled Cheese and Tomato Sandwiches, hands down. It may seem costly when you intially buy your ingredients, but it makes about 10 sandwiches and that works out to about .45 cents a sandwich.

Optional:
10. You're probably too poor to own a camera, but we still want to know what you look like! So, provide us with a representation of yourself in any medium.

I post lots of pictures in my journal, but it should be noted that I have to borrow my Mom's digital camera! Ha!
