I think you're the only person on my flist with the slightest interest, but I went to Don Carlo at the Met on Monday. I'd never heard it live before. I always love Verdi best at the met -- it's just the right size and shape; the marvelous choruses always sound marvelous. The principles weren't as good as some I've heard, though Eboli and Roderigo were excellent. But the drama--there's nothing like being there live. Everything with Philip in it is just intrinsically great. His big "monologue," where he's sitting alone in his huge study, with a giant copy of a Velasquez (wrong date, but still gorgeous) on the wall-- somehow the scale and sets just enhance Verdi, where they overwhelm Mozart and feel sort of circus-like for Puccini or the bel cantos, IMO. It felt very long- well, it is very long, and I almost dozed off a couple times. Still, yay.
Ooh, the Met, what a treat! It's my wish to go to the Met opera and La Scala someday. Thanks for sharing your opera experience with me, it sounds so wonderful.
Well, if you can get to NYC for a few days, you can stay here, and orchestra standing room is only $20 (and you nearly always get a seat, at least after the first intermission.)
