A couple of months ago, rockgeisha and I voted for a name for a newborn panda. The poll result was announced recently. 44% voted for Tai Shan, so Tai Shan he is. I voted for Qiang Qiang (Strong Strong), that name came in second

Also, I think that was a fine painting in the tradition of classical Chinese art. Except more minimalist.

This actually reminds me of one of the radiologists in the hospital I used to work in. He bought reproductions of art, a lot of it Asian, and actually had some pretty nice stuff hanging in the X-ray section of the hospital. "Autumn Evening" or somesuch was one. The crickets in it looked cool. Which has got to be the most trenchant art critique ever, I'm sure.

An art critic can go on and on about colors, textures, lights and what have you but most of the time I think it boils down to, "it looks cool".

I'd even prepared questions to ask the pandas, like, how do they feel about tapirs? Both species are black and white, but tapirs have yet to gain the same level of favorable attention. ...
