Summer and COVID-19 Update

Hey, everyone, it's been a while since I updated! I might as well tell you what's been going on in my life now the year is half over:

At the start of Spring, the salad bar was shut down due to the pandemic. I initially took this as an opportunity to do a more thorough cleaning of the salad bar. This ended up extending to the soup bar, olive bar, and hot bar. I needed a few extra supplies, such as scrubbing pads and Goo-Gone, and I still don't think I completely cleaned everything, but I got a lot of gunk out. After a couple weeks, however, the store decided to use the closed serving stations to display other items, so I moved on to cutting strawberries for a bit. Eventually, even that was covered before I arrived, so since late April, my main tasks have been stocking cut fruit, checking expiration dates in grocery, and cleaning the produce kitchen sinks at the end of my shift. I also finally started stocking regular produce such as berries and onions, even if it was just for a couple days.

Checking expiration dates is something I've enjoyed doing for years, and I do like being able to walk around the store and find expired items. At the same time, however, I'm a bit disappointed to see so much food going to waste. The worst item I found was a packet of ham concentrate (for soup) that expired in December 2013. Fortunately, it was just that one packet, but I've repeatedly found items that expired in 2017 and 2018. Apparently the store used to have someone regularly checking dates, but she's been gone for a while, so I guess it's my job for now. Fellow employees have thanked me for this, and I even got a $10 gift card for helping check dates and stock candy at the registers. I don't mind continuing this for a few more months.

On a different note, last night I finally started watching Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and I must say I am hooked. Dio Brando manages to establish himself as a monster in one episode, and that's before he becomes a vampire. I'm also enjoying Fruits Basket and Wacky TV Nanana, among other shows.

As for the rest of Summer, I hope to go the beach a couple times to collect seaglass. I'm also playing Pokemon Go on my days off and trying to reach Level 30.

I hope my LJ friends are also having a good Summer and staying safe from COVID-19! Wear your mask when necessary, and social distance whenever possible!
