Our local PBS ran a 10 part program on this subject. The great grandson of H.H. Holmes and a former CIA profiler took on the task of determining whether H.H. Holmes and Jack the Ripper were one and the same. Their evidence, while quite overwhelming is not completely conclusive but is compelling. He, the great grandson was the supplier of the DNA for the match. The series was extremely fascinating and should you ever get the opportunity to see it, I would recommend it. It is called "American Ripper." Watching them excavate Holmes' grave was an experience not to be missed. The man was a tricky bastard.

That's putting it nicely!

I ran across references to this show while I was researching the recent grave activities. It looks like the exhumation was mainly done for the show. All that cement must have made things very difficult.

I expect it was. There was a false top grave of sorts and then the cement and the real grave. They made a good case for Holmes most likely being the same person as Jack the Ripper - forensically as well as probable historicity, but of course, it is almost impossible to prove these things to the exclusion of all other possibilities.

So many theories on the Ripper, no answers. Sadly, I don't think anyone's going to definitively nail that down.
