Ryan and I watched Being John Malkovich tonight. It was probably the best movie I've seen in about three years. While watching the scene in which Maxine and Lotte are scrambling around Malkovich's subconscious, I honestly felt for the first time ever that a movie had perfectly depicted an idea that has, for so long, been captivating and ardent in ( Read more... )

I still love the first picture with the smoke.

I saw Being John Malchovich a while ago when it first came out on video. It was thought provoking for me, but I was a bit too young to understand some of the more complicated concepts. I should probably watch it again.

The writer for that movie also wrote the screenplay for Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (which I believe also explored the human subconscious through memories... I don't think it or any movie can really describe it accurately.) My friend considers him the most prolific and promising screenwriter in Hollywood.

Yeah Claire told me earlier that he wrote Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine...he's fuckin' awesome. I agree that no movie (or anything for that matter) could describe the subconscious itself perfectly. I meant more that the scene specifically depicted almost exactly the image I've had in my mind for a while. See I'm working on a story in which this character meets her subconsious and roams around in it...and what I have so far is freakishly similar. If that makes any sense.

I love that movie. Especially the bit with the puppets. I'm not sure what it is about puppets, but...

Plus, Charlie Kaufman, the screenwriter, is amazing.
