Notes: For the holmeswatson09  challenge #2: Watson's cane. Look how inventive my title is!

The first thing Holmes noticed about Watson was his cane. Its regular click, click as he walked down the hallway with Stamford at their first meeting announced his presence well in advance of his walking through the lab door. At the time, it had made him interesting. Someone new to impress and shock with his genius, especially as he had just made a fairly big discovery. As much as he was loathe to admit it, Holmes liked to impress.

What he hadn't expected was that Watson would come to be just as impressive to him as he was to Watson.

In the second instance, Watson's cane marked him out as a soldier - and not just that, but a war hero. Holmes had no love for war, no need for the glory of the battlefield - but he could respect and admire a man who had done a service for his country, and who had saved many lives. Many more than Holmes ever would, probably.

It also marked him as an injured man, one who, though he had no reason to think it, felt himself somehow less than he had once been. In truth, he was so much more now.

Now, Watson's cane was almost as important to Holmes as it was to Watson. Solid and respectable, much like its owner, but with an edge of danger in its concealed blade. He had become used to the cadence of the tip hitting concrete or gravel paths. It sounded like friendship and maybe a little like comfort and tea and intelligent conversation. He could do without it for not much longer than Watson himself could.

Of course, what was far more important to him was the man who carried it. Far more important, indeed, than Holmes was comfortable admitting just yet.
