I love this backstory you came up with for Charles Augustus Milverton! That man always got my back up whenever I was reading the story. I like the idea that Holmes has tangled with him before; it does a lot to explain the risk he takes in breaking into the man's house. (Not that Holmes ever needs a reason to take risks...)

The idea that Holmes had had past dealings comes from the radio plays, actually; he specifically states that he couldn't help a man who'd gotten in trouble with him once before, and my brain filled in the blanks.

Poor Victor...or possibly happy Victor. Scotland Yard was better with cases of homosexual blackmail than we often give them credit for, but Milverton isn't crude enough to let himself be pinned down in court. Ace short tale.

Thank you - Victor's fortunes are mixed; he has to go live in Australia, which is unpleasant for his poor little delicate self, but on the other hand he gets a strapping, doting lover forever who happens to like cuddles.

Holmes was unreasonably hostile towards Milverton vs. every other criminal ever. And in the radio version, there was a man he couldn't help. My mind filled in the blanks (I should not spend my mornings listening to radio plays. They are plot bunnies waiting to happen. DEMANDING plot bunnies.)

I just wanted them to have a happy ending for once.
