So, lately I've been thinking a lot, and I need to write a proper entry on this, but basically, I have a request to make ( Read more... )

I did consider going into Women's Studies or something of that nature, I'd certainly receive the most education in it that way, but I'm not sure if I want to do that or not.

There is a forgetting among people of my age group, for sure, almost like a regressing, both intellectually and sociologically. These are the times in which we can least afford to forget, and we will be run right over if there are not people to drive us forward.

I think I want to be one of those when I grow up.

I would love to just float in this part of academia for the rest of my life! I am a big believer in learning for the sake of it, but I have 0% desire to teach. (I respect the hell out of you that do, that is so incredibly cool, seriously. You charge into the breech every class period to shape young minds. Can't top that, man.) I've got so many electives they're coming out my ears now, but I'll probably be taking some in this too, just because :D ( ... )

deBeauvoir's The Second Sex, definitely. Shulamith Firestone's The Dialectic of Sex -- it's not as in vogue now as it used to be, but it's still interesting. Baumgardner and Richard's ManifestA, which is recent, and third-wave-y and very accessible. Gayle Rubin's "The Traffic in Women" (this is an article, not a book, I believe). Patricia Hill Collin's Black Sexual Politics. Chandra Monhanty's Feminism Without Borders is not my favorite work, but is a defining text in global feminism. Something by Catherine MacKinnon, but I'm not sure what I should recommend. Judith Butler's Gender Trouble certainly qualifies as a defining work, but I would not like to be reading it on my own. Her Undoing Gender was an easier read, and also quite valuable, if not as famous. Most Women's Studies classes I've been in start out with Butler's "Imitation and Gender Insubordination," which is a good place to start with her ( ... )

I'll make notes of all of those. Right now I'm not quite sure what exactly I'm looking for just yet, but I'll absolutely take note of all these and if I have any questions I'll ping you in IRC. I think I did know about your working towards the MA, it sounds familiar.

Lord, I wish I could help you.

I figure most of what I've been reading lately would be considered anti-feminism, because I read those goofy chick-lit books, LOL

I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for yet, actually. Those are good mental silly putty books LOL

like them because they're quick, and I don't have to think too much about them.

When I had more time I used to read the heavy stuff, but I figure my brain has enough heavy stuff on it for right now.

But if you ever need chick-lit recommendations I can give 'em! LOL

Yeah, you've got enough heavy stuff on your mind right now, you don't need to be reading more of it!

Hi, Hyoun! I appreciate your coming by, and doing so from a Blackberry, no less!

I'm going to take a look at all of those! I'm not sure specifically what I'm looking to concentrate on reading-wise just yet, I'm hoping it'll become clear to me once I start, but all these look great, and I absolutely will be Googleing some things as well.

Again, thank you for coming to suggest titles, Hyoun. I can tell already they'll be v. helpful.
