I have one of the original model shuffles. I choose the low-end one, because I planned on using it for jogging, and I didn’t think a hard-drive could really sustain that kind of punishment. I’ve never maxed out it’s song capacity by picking the songs I’d like to hear while running. At the same time, I’ve never run through the full song selection in a single work-out session. I can say that my first one only lasted a year (it died just after the warranty expired). My guess is that sweat got inside it. I got one of those protective skins for my second one, and it’s been good for about the past 18 months. Overall, I’d say it’s been a good purchase.
whoops....I stand corrected. It looks like the battery in mine is going flakey, as it doesnt stay charged for nearly as long as it used to. I'm not sure about other Ipods, but the battery in the shuffle is non-removable, so an end-user cant easily repair it. It's still fairly cost-effective though, as a walkman would typically last me about six months.

this comes only from what I have heard and read... I don't have enough music to require a device like a shuffle or any other kind of p[layer
