Checking my closet right now, I can see that despite my deliberate and pointed neglect, I still have two of the facecloths left that my mother and her husband gave to me on my 18th Christmas. Even little things. Like when I was big on photography. I came over for an entire day once, and I wanted to show her some of the photos I'd taken, but she didn't have time, she said. Same thing when I began building websites -- she had no time to look at them. I wanted to share things I was proud of, you know?
Fortunately, I have one example of what not to do, and one of what I _should_ do. My grandparents are stellar, so I can learn from mistakes as well as things done right.
My fiancee has a grandmother that is manipulative as well -- it can be extremely toxic for the whole family.
