Thanks so much for the advice!! You were totally right; I'm going to wait until the new version comes out. And after a lot of thought, I think I want the black one too! :)

I heard from a classmate that it'll be out September 30th or later, but I can't find any info to back that up!

Your student discount should extend to any upgrades, since mine does (and we're both at UC schools). I got the 13" white MacBook and upgraded to the 2.0Ghz processor, 1GB SDRAM, 80GB hard drive and the Apple Care Plan and it all came out to *just* over $1500. Those upgrades at the regular price would push it over $1700-1800. The only difference now between my MacBook and a low-end Pro is the graphics card, which doesn't matter to me since I don't play video games or do video production.

I thought about getting a Pro as well, but the fact that they only come in 15" and 17" sizes turned me off. That's just to big for a laptop. Plus I wasn't wild about my metal case PowerBook, which caused reception issues with my wireless card's antena. Apple supposedly fixed that issue but I didn't want to risk it.

So sad I have another week and a half at least before it gets here! :P

My first computer was a laptop (not a mac) but it died a little over a year ago. I miss the freedom and mobility it gave, but my bank account didnt miss the price when I bought a desktop. Nate bought a shiney new one a couple of months ago for himself and man am I jealous! Good luck getting yours! :)
Also, about the embroidery, just stuff the majority of your fabric in a tote bag, and go for it! ;)

I think I can definitely survive--at least for a while--without a laptop. I've spent like 1,000 this past week and I haven't even payed tuition yet!

Excellent advice on the embroidery...once I'm more settled, I'm definitely bringing a tote. Forget studying...the library is perfect for embroidery!
