Return from Saturn. With pics!

In the last week or so, things have been up and down on the home front. On the upside, I'm sort of in a truce with my mother...it's like she's "agreed to disagree" with my choice of romantic partner and is mostly being okay to me ( Read more... )

That first picture looks very similar to a wedding shower for a friend of mine a couple years ago. The house belongs to the 80-year-old mother of a friend of my mother's (it's nice when whole families are friends!), and my mother and her friends and daughters (me!) were really the ones who put it on. *shrug* We used the crystal and the silver because we had it, and it's pretty. (P.S. We had a whole lot more food! Although I don't think it was quite as labor-intensive as what I see on the table. :D)

The point is, though, that I never thought of it as Excessively Southern, or even Southern period. This is a very large metropolitan area, after all. It was just a very nice shower. Interesting to get people's perspectives!

(Meant to respond ages ago, and by now I'm sure everyone's forgotten the conversational thread!)

It's true that the scene doesn't seem excessively Southern...there's no way to capture on film the sweltering Georgia humidity every time someone opened the door or the buzz of cicadas or the big fans going overhead and on the screened porch. Or everyone's drawl. :) Lead crystal is just such a rarity where I'm from that it seeemed so foreign! :)

I don't see anything *particularly* Southern about the shower...just formal & pretty! :) (Lead in the crystal excepted, of course.)

The estate looks beautiful. All that green. I'm assuming they have landscapers/gardeners to keep all of that up!

It's true--it was *very* formal! I'm used to showers where everyone plays games. :)

My mother-in-law does most of the mowing and doesn't seem to enthusiastic, but I think deep down she'd miss it if they got a gardener.

Awwww...you're making me get all misty for The South since I'm about to leave! Looks like fun though (and don't you just love shucking corn? I think I've probably done about a million ears in my lifetime). Hope you got a good haul and it wasn't all lead crystal.

Shucking corn is as therapeutic as it is soothing. I hope when I "grow up" I get to shuck a lot more in my own garden. :)

Wow - fun pictures and captions, especially on the dog! And so different from my own experience! My bridal shower was way small and casual. :-)

It was a fun trip! I'm having another one soon, which I think will be more like the kind of shower I'm used to. :)

Sounds like a great time. I love the cat and the dog. What complete opposites!
Im glad there is a truce right now. It makes things bearable, even if they are not resolved.
And it looks like it was a lovely shower, but who wouldnt be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of lead crystal!

Hahaha...you're right! That cat was a smart one, and that dog didn't know his head from his tail. Both were a lot of fun. :)
