the dragon

just a poem for you, who i love very dearly...

the dragon

once gazed upon
dragonkind

mistress of seas
master of winds

a thing in its ancient element
rings true when all seems false

regarding my first last dragon
only fine fragments of memory

pearls closely held remain
waves pushing onwardly down

fearless of overarched flame
heedless of flesh-piercing claw

careless of unsharpened teeth
speechless of eyes peering in

shadows deeper than oxblood
folds darker than moonless sky

lungs heaving heavy air
heart catapulting great wings

thoughts racing by blindly
clouds flowing on damply

thunder as sounded by lightning
dumbstruck stones rolling molten

fires throwing great distance
tears rising falling in reflex

heart serenely leaping up
doubts all forever dispersed

scales becoming each like every
iron slick unyielding black ice

vast powerful readily twisting
perilous coiling erotically rhythmic

singeing black the sweet night
scattering wide her newmade stars

above blue planet spinning softly around
fierce storms grazing long sleek belly

overvaulting each vanished island
near invisibly miniatured below

animals circled running in perfect unison
tailwinds shearing cleanly vorticed apart

flown to brittle edges of smoldering worlds
breaking gravity's honed blade to hold sway

'til silence shod only in absence eerily reveals
smooth tracks instinctually left on air

clear as ligatures of unfurled vast wings
against swaths of sky so forcibly compressed

yet it's not by speedness of flight
but by stillness of standing

that love has patiently made you dragonkind
for being alike to none other

you can become nothing else
your love like wings and claws taking hold

your need like want lustrous as wisdom's pearls
still precious in unmeasured depths

there biding long years in sheltering shells
'til time has turned the tide

'til what was hidden is at last revealed
and what is found at last belongs

once gazed on
dragonkind

mistress of seas
master of winds

a thing in its ancient element
rings true when all seems false
