When I was coming back from Shropshire the week before last, I was discussing personal heroes with some of my colleagues. I enjoy hearing about people's heroes, as they're quite personal and can say quite a lot about a person. Hmmmmm. I'm not very good at this sort of quesiton, as I don't carry lists around in my head. One of my heroes is Charlotte Perkins Gilman, though. Another is Zora Neale Hurston. Peter Lombard. Michael Moore. Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Lots more people.

I'm not really big on heroes, but I do like to tip my hat to Carl Djerassi, who invented the oral contraceptive and thereby freed women from sex=pregnancy, bringing with it sexual, domestic, medical and psychological liberation.

Kate Adie. No doubt about it. Even as a kid in the 80s I used to point at her on TV reporting in her bullet proof vest and tell my Mum I wanted to be like her. In a way, I still do, especially since having read her autobiographies. I have tremendous respect for people who are f***ing terrified of what they are doing...but still do it anyway. That´s courage. And (sad to say) I know I could never actually do that.
