Takaki was taking his usual route for a jog. It was his favorite route because the other students usually take the main route. He stopped in his tracks when he saw someone standing on the rail of the bridge near the lake.
“I-Is he trying to jump?!”
SPLASH!
“Oh my god! HE JUMPED!!!” Takaki yelled in surprise. He immediately ran towards the lake. When the guy didn’t resurface, Takaki suddenly went into panic mode. “Uh, kimi, hang in there! I’m coming!”
Takaki was in the midst of taking of his clothes when the guy went on shore.
“What are you doing?” the guy asked.
“Uh…saving you?” Takaki said dumbly.
He glared. “What made you think I need to be saved?!” He put his clothes back on.
“You don’t need to be a grouch,” Takaki muttered. The guy didn’t say anything and left. “Hey, at least tell me your name!” Takaki yelled.
“Mada mada dane,” the guy arrogantly said.
“Che,” Takaki muttered. Then, he saw something on the ground. He picked it up. “That guy dropped his student id. Let’s see who he is,” Takaki said to himself. “Yamada Ryosuke?” Takaki read out loud. “Hmmm, isn’t he the new transfer student Yabu was talking about yesterday?”
-----------------------------
“I knew I’d found you here,” Shoon said as he entered one of the studios in the building.
Inoo’s fingers never stop playing the musical notes when he replied, “Why are you here?”
Shoon closed the door to the studio. “I saw you leaving the dorm this morning, so I thought I’d follow you.”
“Aah~”
“Want to talk to me about it?” Shoon asked, leaning against the front of the grand piano.
Inoo stopped playing his piece. He looked at Shoon. “Instead of worrying about me, you should be worrying about the Musical Concour.”
Shoon went to seat on an empty chair. “Iie,” he said. “Friends always come first.”
A smile crept on Inoo’s face. “That’s true,” he said. After a short while, he said again, “Arigatou, Shoon, but really, I’m fine.”
Shoon just looked at Inoo for a while before sighing. “Okay, I get it. I’ll leave you along for now.” Before Shoon left the studio, he said, “Don’t forget about breakfast. We’ll be waiting at the students’ lounge in an hour.”
“Hai, hai,” Inoo said. Shoon then left the room.
--------------------------------------
“Takaki-kun, why are you getting sloppy today?” their dance instructor asked, looking straight at Takaki.
“Gomen, sensei, I guess I was careless,” Takaki said, scratching the back of his head.
“There’s no room for mistakes if you want to be the best, Takaki-kun,” the dance instructor said. “Listen here, everyone,” she said, looking at everyone in the dance studio. “Th-…”
Shiina, the dance instructor, was cut off when the door to the studio opened. A teen entered the studio. “Sorry for intruding, is this Shiina sensei’s dance class?”
“Hai,” she answered. “You must be Yamada-kun.” The teen nodded. There were whispers among the other students. “Yamada-kun, although you’re a teen star, but I will not give you any special treatments.”
“I won’t accept anything more.”
Shiina sensei nodded her head. Then, she returned her gaze at all the students in the studio. “As I was saying, the competition will be held in a month. If you want to win, you can’t afford to make any mistakes!”
“Hai~!” everyone answered.
Takaki was staring at Yamada with a smirk plastered on his face. “So, he can be polite,” he said to himself.
Yabu, who was doing some warm-ups next to Takaki looked at his best friend, saying, “I’m sorry, what did you say?”
Takaki looked at Yabu with a smile that made Yabu think, ‘I have a bad feeling about this’ and said, “It’s nothing.”
Yabu continued to look at Takaki with a disbelief expression. “Sure…” he said.
----------------------------------------------
“Hey, Yamada-kun,” Takaki yelled out, chasing after Yamada when their class is over. “You dropped something.”
Yamada turned and look at Takaki. “Oh, you,” he said without any expressions on his face.
“You dropped this,” Takaki said as he gave Yamada’s student id back to the owner. Without even a thank you, Yamada began walking away. Takaki ran up to him. “So, what are you going to do now?”
“It’s none of your business,” Yamada retorted.
Takaki just doesn’t seem to care even when Yamada is being mean. “Where are you going?”
“It is none of your damn business!” Yamada yelled out.
Takaki still didn’t stop. “Come on, we’re classmates, ne?”
Yamada stopped walking, and Takaki caught up with him. He turned facing Takaki. “Would you leave me alone?!!!” Yamada snapped.
“No,” Takaki answered bluntly.
“Fine,” Yamada said and before Takaki could react, he started walking again.
Takaki ran after Yamada again. “Hey, wait up!” Yamada chose to ignore him this time.
-------------------------------------------------------
A week before the competition, Shiina sensei announced the names of the people who will be representing the academy.
“Yabu-kun and Takaki-kun,” she said.
“Hai~!” Yabu answered, while Takaki looked at Yamada. “Eh? You didn’t auditioned for it?”
“Why should I?” Yamada replied. “It doesn’t benefit me at all.”
“But-…”
“Takaki, stop bothering Yamada-san,” Yabu interrupted.
Takaki sighed. “Hai~”
-------------------------------------------------------------
“So, what are you going to perform later, Yabu?” Takaki asked as they were walking back to their dorm.
“I’m not sure,” Yabu exclaimed. “Well, something might come into my mind later.”
“Yeah,” Takaki agreed.
“Look out!” they heard someone shout from a distance.
Yabu and Takaki saw a wheelbarrow coming towards their direction; towards Yabu’s direction to be precise. So, Takaki pushed Yabu out of the way, and he himself jumped out of the way.
After the wheelbarrow crashed to the other side, Takaki looked at his best friend. “Yabu, are you okay?”
Yabu looked at Takaki. “I think I sprained my ankle.”
The two guys that warned Yabu and Takaki earlier ran towards them. “Senpai, are you alright?”
Takaki recognized the two juniors from the piano division. “Negi, tell Shoon that Yabu’s in the hospital wing.”
“Don’t,” Yabu immediately interrupted.
“But-…”
“Shoon needs to concentrate for the Annual Musical Concour,” Yabu said.
Takaki sighed. He looked at Negi and Kamiya. “Tell the nurse that Yabu needs treatment and we’ll be arriving shortly.”
“Hai~!” the two teens said, and they immediately ran to the hospital wing.
------------------------------------------------------
“You should have called for me earlier,” Shoon told Yabu. When he heard about Yabu after his class ended, he immediately ran to the hospital wing.
“It’s no big deal,” Yabu told his lover, who sat at the edge of his bed. “I just sprained my ankle, that’s all.”
“Yabu, what are you going to do about the competition?” Takaki asked.
“I can’t participate,” Yabu said.
“But…”
“I’m sure Shiina-sensei will know what to do,” Yabu cut in.
Takaki just looked at Yabu without saying anything.
-------------------------------------------------------
“This is a disaster!” Shiina sensei said dramatically. Practically everyone, excluding Yamada, rolled his or her eyes. “Where can I find someone as good as Yabu?”
“What about Hikaru-kun from the other class B?” Airi asked
Shiina sensei shook her head. “Michi sensei has already chosen him to participate.” Then, her eyes set on Yamada, who was leaning against the wall. “Yamada!”
Yamada looked at her. “Hai~ sensei,” he said.
“You’ll be Yabu’s substitute for the competition,” Shiina sensei said.
“I decline,” Yamada said.
They were whispers among the students.
“Keep quiet,” Shiina sensei said, looking at the other students. Then, she turned back to Yamada. “This is not a request, Yamada.” She looked at everyone in the dance studio. “Listen up! I am not being biased for choosing Yamada-kun. Indeed, he didn’t auditioned for the competition, but from my observation of your presentation in class, Yamada-kun is one of the best. It is the academy’s duty to send out the best students as representative in competitions, and to bring glory to the school’s name.”
Everyone was silent after that. Shiina sensei looked at Yamada again. “So, what do you say?”
Yamada sighed. “I’ll participate.”
Shiina sensei put a hand on Yamada’s shoulder. “Good,” she said.
Yamada muttered under his breath. “It’s not like I have a choice.”
---------------------------------------------------
“What have I put myself into?” Keito said to himself. Everywhere he goes, Hikaru always seems to find him. “Why did we come to this school anyway?” Keito sighed. He sat on the bench near the lake.
Flashback
It was midnight. As usual, Keito was reading in his room. Suddenly there was a knock on the door. Knowing whom it was, Keito said, “It’s unlocked.”
The door opened and in come Yamada. After he entered, he closed the door again. Yamada sat on Keito’s bed. Keito, who was reading at his study table, turned his chair around so that he’d face Yamada.
“Why are you still reading at this time?” Yamada asked. “Didn’t oji-san tell you that it’s not good for your health?”
Keito pushed his reading glasses up the bridge of his nose. “That’s why you shouldn’t tell on me,” he replied. Yamada chuckled. “So, how was the concert?” Keito asked. “I know you didn’t come here just to tell me about my reading habit.”
“The concert was…tiring,” Yamada answered.
“Hmmm~” Keito said. He took a carton of orange juice from his shelf. “Juice?” he asked.
“Sure,” Yamada replied. Keito took another carton and threw it at Yamada. “Have I ever told you how awesome you are for smuggling food into your room?”
Keito laughed. “You stay up late, you’ll get to have supper.” After taking a sip of his juice, he said, “By the way, sorry for not making it to your concert. You know what’s it like at the orchestra.”
“You get to have dinner with rich, old people,” Yamada answered.
Both cousins laughed. “Yup,” Keito said.
There was a short pause before Yamada said, “Keito, I’m tired.”
“So, what do you want to do?” Keito asked.
“I miss the feeling of going to school.”
After thinking for a while, Keito said, “Let’s go.”
Surprised, Yamada asked, “Where?”
“Back to Japan,” Keito answered. Yamada didn’t say a thing. “My dad wanted me to enter Kitagawa’s Music Academy. We could go together.”
“But what if…”
“That’s the whole point of going there together, baka!” Keito said playfully. “I’ll get to watch your back.”
Yamada smiled. That was the same thing that Keito told him when he found him unconscious on the street, when they found out they’re related. “Arigatou.”
END OF FLASHBACK
“Kei. To!”
Keito was snapped out of his thought when he heard someone calling his name. He then saw Hikaru standing in front of him, their faces only inches apart.
Keito pushed Hikaru away. “What are you doing?”
Hikaru stumbled back a little. “Maa~ that’s mean of you Keito.”
“I don’t care,” Keito, retort. He stood up. “And I never recalled giving you permission to call me by my name.”
“Hey, we’re roommates, aren’t we?”
Keito just ignored him and walked away. Hikaru ran after him. “Awe, come on, Keito.”
“I want to be alone,” Keito yelled.
“What? I don’t hear you,” Hikaru said playfully. Then, he glomped Keito from behind. Keito lose his balance and fell to the ground. They were in a rather compromising position.
“What are you doing?”
Both Keito and Hikaru looked up and saw…
“Kei-chan,” Hikaru said when he saw his best friend.
“Get off me, Yaotome-san,” Keito said from underneath.
“Iie,” Hikaru replied stubbornly.
“Hikaru!” Inoo said. He gave Hikaru a glare.
“Alright, I get it,” Hikaru said. He stood up.
Inoo helped Keito up. “Okamoto-san, are you alright? Are your fingers alright?”
“I’m fine, thanks,” Keito said. Then, without another word, Keito left.
Hikaru was about to go after Keito, but Inoo grabbed his hand first.
“Kei-chan, what are you doing?”
“We’re going to see Yabu,” he said.
“Eh??? You’re not going to file a report on me, are you?”
Inoo sighed. “No, Hikaru.” Hikaru sighed in relief. “We’re going to visit Yabu at the hospital wing. He hurt his leg.”
“What?! But the competition is just around the corner,” Hikaru said. Before Inoo could reply, Hikaru said, “Let’s get going.”
TWO WEEKS LATER
Yabu, Daiki, Shoon, and Inoo were seeing Takaki and Hikaru off, those who are participating in the competition.
“Hikaru, don’t do anything reckless,” Yabu said. He looked at Takaki you too. “You too. With both your minds combined, I don’t know what might happen.”
“Oh, Yabu, you don’t trust us?” Hikaru said.
“We’re hurt,” Takaki added in.
The others laugh. “What Yabu meant was don’t pull any stupid jokes or pranks,” Daiki said.
“Understood.”
All of them said at once to Hikaru and Takaki. “Best of luck to you.”
“Arigatou!” they laughed.
“Hey, why is Yamada-san alone?” Inoo asked.
Yabu sighed. “Yamada-san never really socializes with anyone during classes, so…”
“I see,” Inoo said. The others nodded their head as well.
“Well, let us wish him luck,” Shoon suggested. They were just about to walk over to Yamada when passed by them.
----------------------------------------------
“Ryosuke,” Keito called out, panting.
Yamada looked up when he heard someone calling his name. “Keito,” he said.
“Gomen I’m late,” he said, panting.
“It’s okay, as long as you make it,” Yamada replied. “Did you ran all the way here?” he asked, looking at his panting cousin.
Keito chuckled. “Hai~!” He stood up straight. “Anyway, here.” He gave a small bag to Yamada.
Yamada looked at Keito questioningly. “What’s in it?”
“Extra scarf, socks, your vitamins-…”
“Okay, okay, I get it,” Yamada cut in. He raised his eyebrow at his cousin. “Since when did you become my nanny?”
“Ever since you stayed with us, baka,” Keito laughed. Yamada smiled. “Anyway, good luck.”
“Thanks,” Yamada said. He waved and boarded the bus. Keito then returned to their dormitory.
Yabu and the group
“Okay, what just happened?” Daiki asked.
“I never thought I’d see him smile or laugh,” Takaki said, referring to Yamada.
“Me neither,” Hikaru said, referring to Keito.
“I never thought Okamoto-san is the type to fuss about someone,” Inoo admitted.
“Well, there’s more than meet the eyes after all,” Shoon said.
“Now you see why I’m attracted to him,” Hikaru said.
Daiki smacked Hikaru lightly on the shoulder, laughing. “You wouldn’t have known that.” The others joined in. Inoo, on the other hand, just forced a smile.
“I guess his bond with his cousin is really close,” Yabu said.
“Well, I guess we’ll board the bus now,” Takaki said. He and Hikaru waved at their friends. “Bye.”
-------------------------------------------------
“I can’t believe this,” Yamada said when he found out who his hotel roommate is.
“Hey, don’t blame me,” Takaki said, putting his hands up in defense. “I have nothing to do with the room arrangement.”
“Why do I find it hard to believe?”
“B-But…it’s true!”
Yamada just rolled his eyes. Then, there was a knock on the door. Takaki opened it, and Shiina sensei entered.
“Come down in 5 minutes, okay?” she said. “We’re going to meet the other participants.”
“Hai~!” both of them replied. Shiina sensei closed the door.
“Shall we go?”
Yamada didn’t say anything. He just stood up and went out of the room, followed by Takaki.
-----------------------------------------------------
After they were introduced to the staff for the competition, the teachers from other schools, and the other participants, they were given time to explore the place, and etcetera.
“I can’t believe I get to see Yamada-kun in person,” a girl, their rival from another school said.
“Don’t think that just because you’re famous, you’ll win the competition,” Kevin, another participant, sneered.
“Oh, I’ll think about it,” Yamada smirked, making Kevin growl.
“You know, it’s not good to rile others, especially our rivals,” Hikaru said.
“Mada mada,” Yamada said. “I’m going out.” He stood up and went out of the hotel.
“That kid is really…” Takaki sighed.
------------------------------------------------------
Yamada walked around the hotel’s garden. He took a deep breath, inhaling the cold evening air.
‘Why did I ever agree to this?’ Yamada thought. He reached for his cell phone in his pocket. “I guess I’ll give Keito a call.”
Yamada was about to dial Keito’s number when he heard a faint voice calling his name. “Yamada-kun~”
Curious, Yamada followed the voice. Every time he was close, the voice gets further away again. Yamada followed the voice until he reached a cabin on top of the hill. Yamada entered the cabin. “Is anyone here?”
----------------------------------------------------------
About ten minutes after Yamada left, Takaki looked at Hikaru. “I think I’m going to look for Yamada.”
“Sure,” Hikaru said. “Wait, can I borrow your cell phone?”
Takaki gave his cell phone to Hikaru. “I’ll see you later,” Takaki said. Hikaru nodded and Takaki left.
Takaki saw Yamada going towards the hilltop so he followed the younger teen. When Yamada entered the cabin, Takaki followed as well.
“Is anyone here?” Yamada asked.
“You’re looking for someone?” Takaki asked him.
Yamada was startled. He turned facing Takaki. “What are you doing here?”
“I followed you,” Takaki answered.
Yamada glared at Takaki. “Have you seen anyone else nearby?”
“No. Why?”
“It’s-…”
Yamada stopped talking when the cabin’s door suddenly closed on its own. Yamada tried to open it but it won’t budge.
“Darn it,” Yamada said.
Takaki went to the window and tried to open it but failed. “The window won’t open too.”
“Darn it,” Yamada said.
“It’s probably one of the participants.”
Yamada shot a glare at Takaki. “You seem calm about this.”
“I’ve been entering competitions for a long time,” Takaki shrugged. “Although this has never happened to me before, but I guess I know what it’s like.”
“You can’t possibly know,” Yamada muttered under his breath.
“Did you say something?” Takaki asked, tilting his head.
Yamada just rolled his eyes and took out his cell phone. “Kuso!” he cursed when he saw there’s no signal there.
“I guess we’ll just have to stay until someone notice we’re missing,” Takaki said, and he received another glare from Yamada. “What? It’s the truth.”
“Anyway,” Yamada said, going to another end of the cabin. “This is my side, and that’s your side.” He sat down, leaning against the wall. “Don’t you dare come anywhere near me.”
“Hai~! I understand.”
-------------------------------------------------------------
A few hours has passed. It seems like no one notice their missing. Takaki hummed the melody of the song he’ll be performing at the competition. “Yamada is awfully quiet,” he said to himself. He looked up and saw Yamada sleeping.
‘He looks kind of fragile like that,’ Takaki thought. Then, Takaki noticed Yamada shivered a little, so he decided to go to Yamada’s side.
Takaki looked at Yamada’s sleeping face. Takaki gulped. ‘His lips looks so tempting,’ he thought. Without realizing it, he had move closer and closer to Yamada.
“What are you doing?”
Takaki saw Yamada staring back at him. Takaki immediately moved back. Yamada glared. “People like you are all the same.” Yamada stood up. Takaki did the same.
“What are you talking about?” Takaki asked.
“People like you only want that right?” he spat out. “Despicable people like you.”
“Yamada, why are you being so defensive? I didn’t do anything-…” he stopped talking when Yamada went closer to him. The younger teen was looking at him intensely, unbuttoning his shirt. “What are you doing?” Takaki asked.
“Can’t you see with your own eyes?” Yamada asked. He threw his shirt on the ground once he was done unbuttoning it. Then, he started to unzip his pants.
Takaki frowned. “Why are you taking off your clothes?”
“This is what everyone wants, isn’t it?” Yamada said sternly, pulling down his pants along with his boxers. “To get in my pants!”
Takaki frowned deeper. He and Yamada were in a glaring contest for a few minutes, and then he looked away. Takaki stood up and walked towards Yamada. He bend down and picked up Yamada’s clothes.
“Here,” Takaki said, shoving the clothes to Yamada. “I’ll return to my side of the room and look away until you’re done dressing up.”
Yamada just stared at Takaki’s back. He thought, ‘Why didn’t he-…’
----------------------------------------------------
“Okamoto, can’t sleep?”
Although Keito didn’t show it, but he was slightly startled when Yabu came. He thought he was the only one in the students’ lounge at that time.
“You do know that you can’t be here after light’s out, right?”
Keito turned facing Yabu when the older teen sat in front of him. “Then why are you here, Iinchou?” Keito asked. He looked at Yabu with a raised eyebrow.
“It’s my duty to patrol around every night.”
“Shouldn’t you be resting with that injured leg of yours?”
“A little walk will do me good actually,” Yabu replied. Then, he asked, "Worried about Yamada-san?"
Keito didn’t say anything and continued drinking his coffee. Yabu eyed him. “Coffee in the middle of the night? No wonder you couldn’t sleep.” Keito put down his drink. “You shouldn’t be drinking coffee at midnight. It’s not good for health.”
“You’re pretty annoying.”
Yabu blinked once, blinked twice. “Eh?” he said.
Without saying another word, Keito left. Yabu just chuckled as Keito disappeared from sight. He didn’t know why, but Keito just seems different from the others. He seems interesting. “Now I understand why Hikaru fell for him,’ he thought.
