My LJ paid time ran out the other day, and for the first time in years, I had no idea whether or not I should renew it.

You can keep your LJ account but switch to a free user, right? Maybe that's the way to go for now. I don't know how much different that would be other than fewer userpics but you could still use the site to keep up with those who are still around and maybe after a while decide if it's worth it to re-upgrade to a paid account, stick with the free one, or finally drop it altogether.

I've gotten started on tumblr a bit but mostly just to follow some things that aren't on LJ. I don't like how everything seems so unsubstantial on tumblr though. LJ seems more conducive to conversation and reflection which I prefer.

Yeah, I was considering that, but it seems that for my birthday my sister upgraded my account as usual. :) Which is nice, 'cause I do get to keep my extra userpics and the ability to edit comments and all the other nice things I've gotten used to.

Beyond that, though, I do think I'll be doing basically what you're saying--keep up with those who are still here, feel it out over the next few months, etc. I'm trying very hard not to give up completely just yet, 'cause I fully agree with you--I like LJ much more than tumblr for conversation, reflection, etc. I just think it's better!
