This Saturday I'm scheduled for my first audition in almost three years. I haven't sung regularly at all since then, and I've only performed twice (hi Nan ( Read more... )

Oh wow - you were *part of* the Dale Warland Singers. When you mentioned their rehearsals in your response to my post a few weeks ago, I just figured you watched their auditions or something. Duh! I'm really impressed that you sang with them - they are great! (Now I'm kind of intimidated by you, lol)

I think you should go to the audition and just do your best, even if you don't know the material all that well. Just like I always tell clients who are job-seeking, it's good to keep your interviewing/auditioning muscles toned.

Go for it! You may be pleasantly surprised by how you do.

I could not be less intimidating. ladivinafemme April 5 2006, 17:57:59 UTC
I actually felt squicky tooting my horn like that.

As a Minnesotan, I expect you'd understand.

:-D

Oh babe, I soooo understand, lol.

I'm still really impressed. :)

For those of you who aren't in the Minnesota know, that Dale Warland Singers were an *incredible* choral group based out of the Twin Cities. Quite a big deal, really.

heh. My parents gave me the "tribute" DVD they made and I wasn't on it AT ALL. Not in any of the old pictures, nothing. Weird, huh? I actually had a diva moment while we were watching it. (heehee)

But if you go to Amazon.com and search under my real name, it pulls up a couple of the DWS CDs that I have solos on.

I have different advice. It depends on the kind of person you are. For me personally, I wouldnt go, unless I was more prepared vocally(with the muscles). If I felt like I made a bad impression, I would be embarrased, and I wouldnt want my reputation as a singer to lessen. That's just me. It would also cause me to not feel as confident in myself to be able to get up there next time. BUT. If you feel you can do it vocally, or that it will build your confidence for next time, then go for it girl!

Irish..and Good luck deciding!

See that's just the thing. I don't even have a reputation as a singer out here, and I don't even know if there will be a next time (by my choice).

I know, I know, it's only 4 minutes. I don't know why all the angst -- that's just how I operate, I guess.

That's a good point. My advice was just of the "friendly" nature, not from a professional musician perspective.

ONLY 4 Minutes! Girl, that's a long time! (not to be creating more angst and stuff..lmao) Here's what I do when under that sort of pressure. I swear it works. I used to do auditions and stuff for orchestra's in DC, I played flute..I was scared shitless, and would always do extremely hard pieces becouse I was competing against ppl much older than I was. I would go in there, and KNOW I was better, and Feel Superior. LOL I would use my Fear/angst and turn it into feelings of power, and superiority. It worked everytime. I carried my head high, and channeled the ultimate Bitch..seriously...lol. And I always got in first chair, rarely making a mistake. Course when I got home, I fell apart, and shoke like a leaf..ROFL!

Having had a bad experince wih an audition I wasn't preparded for, I wouldn't do it, but that's me. Some people can just pull i togeher quickly; I'm not one of them. If you can, do it. The people at the audiion probably don't remember the singers they're not interested it all hat well, si it's probably no that bad if it doesn't work out.

Professional auditions for Cape Cod Opera were last week (though i'll bet they'll send someone to the BSR auditions), but you should totally go out for those next year. That's where I sing (in the chorus), and plenty of the pros are from Boston and carpool and stuff.

Yeah, they're coming this weekend. I did audition for them that summer (how awkward to sing full-out in that living room!) I think they were doing Pagliacci, right?

Anyway, I'm very much used to winging auditions and doing well, but always in the past I was in decent vocal shape. That's the difference this time.

I really appreciate everyone's comments!

Ah, Paliacci. Yes, we did that, but it was before I realized how important it is for me to make time to be able to do stuff that I love. Alas, I was not in that one. I was in Amahl later that year, though. (I'd been in productions previous to Paliacci, but school and later work got in the way).

I've never done one of the pro auditions (though I plan to next year, when I'm in better vocal shape). I did my chorus audition at Tom Vassil's house several years ago. When we had his good-bye party a few months ago, there were stories from other chorus members about trecking out to Orleans to audition in his livingroom...

Cool about doing the pro auditions next year! I'm not sure whose living room it was, but it was in Hyannis. Nice house, weird place to sing.
