He knew her feet were sore, rubbed raw from the miles of jungle that they'd trekked in an effort to get back to the beach. If he'd been stronger, he would have offered to carry her. With every step she took, her face scrunched up into a wince of sorts. Daniel's face mimicked it...but not because he was the one in pain. Chivalry may have been thought long dead in the world, but it managed just fine within the physicist. Perhaps he never escaped from the old days...Things were simpler then.
But back to the matter at hand, he found it frustrating that he was unable to do anything to soothe Charlotte's pain. Granted, he hadn't known her that long, but he'd known her long enough to become friendly acquaintances with the woman. And seeing her in pain caused him no small amount of discomfort. She was tougher than she looked; he knew that. But still...
He dropped back a bit to speak with her.
"How you holding up?" he asked her quietly to the side.
She gave him a wry smile. "Just peachy."
"I could ask Jack to slow down..."
"Why, tired?"
He blinked. "Um, no."
"Good," she said. "Because the sooner we get there, the better. I've been on this island less than a day and I'm already ready to get off."
Daniel thought that was strange since she'd volunteered to stay behind instead of hop on the helicopter. "I thought you wanted to stay..."
"I'm just complaining," she told him. "You shouldn't take everything I say so seriously, Dan. Honestly."
"Sorry."
"And stop apologizing!" She sounded exasperated now, whether it was due to him or the long walk was not clear to Daniel. "If I wanted an apology, I'd ask for one, yeah?"
"Sorr--yeah." He caught himself.
She smiled. "Good. Now c'mon, we don't want to be left behind."
They quickly caught up with the group once more.
