Writing mysteries

I'm finding it much, much more difficult writing gen than the other stuff I used to write before.  Mainly because before I concentrated on relationships and angst and melodrama.  Now with gen, it seems to be all about plot and action and movement ( Read more... )

I think you're at a point in your writing that I kinda was at last year - I got sick of the romance only, since I found most of those ideas tired and overused.

Writing gen is harder, IMHO, since the audience isn't built for it. Nowadays fandoms are so pairing centric that it's hard to just tell a non-romantic story.

If you're writing a mystery, I'd probably build an outline, and then work from there - but leave yourself open to the possibility of changing the plot if something good comes up!

I do agree that there's some fandoms where pairings seem to be the be-all and end-all, but there are a few wherein gen fics reign supreme. But yeah, trying to write for a gen audience is much more difficult because I can't quite tell what they want from a fic.

This is a good idea. But this is in part why I don't like posting WIPs because I always seem to change my mind in the middle.

Thanks for your help though, much appreciated!
