She'd taken a corner table in the mess hall, where she could keep her back to the wall and observe everyone. Kate scanned the room for a place to sit. Dinner time brought the usual crowds and space was at a premium, yet there was one table that was nearly empty. Making her way over, Kate smiled at the lone occupant and nodded to the seat across from her. "Mind if I join you?"

Kate smiled as she sat and began to eat. "There are likely many reasons. They have friends they're more comfortable with and don't like change, they're new and don't know anyone and are shy, or they are loners and like to keep to themselves. It's not necessarily because of who you are, Lani."

She took a sip of her tea. "So, how was your day?"

She nodded. "I know, I didn't think it was anything personal. It's just...I never quite know how to go about making friends, and everyone seems to think I'd rather be left alone."

She took a drink of her cocoa - cold, by now, but she didn't care; it still tasted good, and the experience of drinking was new enough to be interesting on its own. "My day was pretty boring...I really don't have much of a life." The verbal dance is always interesting, too, trying to say enough to not be dodging the questions, but not tell the other woman who she really is.
