I had a fantastic sleep last night and got up this morning ready to hit the cobblestones. Dan headed out early to the last day of his conference and I got ready here then headed out myself. I went back to the pub-y place again for breakfast because we'd seen signs last night that they had cheap traditional English breakfast. So I got that and it ( Read more... )

When I backpacked through Europe, all the Canadians had huge maple leaf patches sewn on their bags. I guess they don't want to be mistaken as Americans either!

Why would Americans pose as Canadians?

A lot of Americans now put huge maple leafs on their bags to try and pass for Canadians. Canada seems to have a better reputation over here than America. Maybe because we're part of the Commonwealth and that Canada was there to help first during both world wars. Also, Canada is more like Europe/England than it is like America. We have the same style of government and Canada is still all about the Queen. She's on all of our money!

We haven't stuck our noses in quite as many international affairs either, so we haven't disturbed as much shit, you know? We're kind of like the Switzerland of North America! :P

When we lived in AU, not one person asked me if I was american. They just automatically assumed I was Canadian!

Really? That's interesting!
When we were in Switzerland/Rome/Paris last year everyone assumed we were British because we spoke English and they couldn't tell the difference in accent. I guess that makes more sense than assuming someone is from halfway around the world!!

Yeah, they would always say "Oh! Are you Canadian??" And of course I would say that no, indeed I was an american. And they're say "Oh" and give me a look like I'd steal their wallet if they gave me half a chance!

1) Don't eat at that pub anymore! You are breaking Vacation Rules. Do not eat at the same place more than once - you only have limited time to eat at as many different places as possible!!!

2) He assumed you were American because Americans are ze best. In fact, as I read that, I was like "well he was right." THEN remembered you're Northern American (aka Canadian).

3) Why would Americans pose as Canadians?!

4) Boo on school holidays. That would cramp my style.

I thought Americans posed as Canadians abroad a lot to avoid judgment (since America used to have a really bad rep internationally, right...maybe not so much anymore). I've had friends who went backpacking and met lots of Americans who had maple leaves sewn on their bags on purpose and stuff.

That seems really ridiculous. I love that people hate Americans, yet we help every other country in the world.

Yeah, I dunno? It's all about perspective I guess.

That is funny he thought you had an American accent! Though people have told me I sound American too (I've even had people ask where I'm from...I'm like, uh, here?).

That's crazy that people think you have an accent!! When we were in Switzerland/Rome/Paris last year everyone thought our accents were Brittish.

I know, it's weird! I have been asked at least three times since being at UBC if I'm American, or just generally where I'm from.
