Walking to Bree Challenge

Today I reached the next milestone in the "walking to Bree" challenge--the woods above Woodhall (46 miles total). Didn't see any Black Riders or elves. "The Atlas of Middle-earth" has the hobbits walking at 3.5 miles per hour for this part of their journey. That's pretty fast for their short little legs.

hiking, my happy day, lotr

That is fast for their little legs - and doesn't seem to allow for any breaks for sustenance at all!

Surprising they would push themselves to go that fast--until they run into that first Black Rider, there isn't any real sense of urgency.

I've often wondered about that. Hobbits are described as "hardy at need" or something along those lines, and I guess Frodo at least could be thinking he'd lingered too long or something? But it hardly seems to match the idyllic jaunt I remember thinking that part of the book to be.

When they are in Lothlorien, "The Atlas of Middle-earth" has them jogging at 4mph! But then some of the journeys on horseback are oddly slow at only 5 or 6 mph.
