My mom was 9 when this horror happened. When the truth began to surface in American newspapers, my grandparents tried to hide them, but of course that didn't work. Mom told me once that discovering this kind of evil in people colored the rest of her childhood and adolescence, turned the world into a terrifying place.
We have to know it's out there, pay attention, in order to speak out against it. Don't let it tip the balance for you, though - love has always been far more powerful than fear and its attendant miseries, and it always will be. Wrap yourself up your family, your friends, the hearts of all the good people in this world.
