Hi all,
It has been brought to my attention that I have been terribly lax in getting out picture updates. Too true. The good news is that I have been taking the pictures. I just haven't been getting them sent out. :) So, I spent the morning getting them ready and here they are.

I've been spending my time getting the house back into order, planting my spring garden, and starting back up my horseback riding. It is a gorgeous spring here at the ranch. So many different shades of green, it is amazing.
I must mention that Kai's Aunt Katie has the best taste in toys. Several weeks ago, Kai started being aware of toys. The ones sent by Katie quickly became his favorites. He still has trouble holding the toy to his satisfaction. He is still working hard on those motor skills. He can push all the way up off of his chest during his daily "tummy time". For 2 months now, he does well at standing as long as we hold his hands for balance. He started by just standing for about 30 seconds. These days, he can stand for 5-10 minutes or more at a time. No steps yet and no independent standing. Crawling is not yet happening, but he is happy now during "tummy time" and works hard on the skills he'll need for crawling for up to 5 minutes at a time. He has rolled from his back to his side, in each direction. He has also rolled from his tummy all the way to his back now.
He has long been very aware of his environment. He loves his world and his people. Where previously, he would cry for hunger, diaper changing, and sleep, now he also cries for attention and companionship. Fortunately, he has a very good nature and doesn't cry much. He started teething about a week ago. First inconsolable crying he's done since his first month, but only occasionally. Poor guy, teething is never fun. Still, his good nature shines through even then...between squeals of pain, he looks up at me and smiles before melting down again in pain. I can usually help him get to sleep and that helps a lot, since the pain passes is time. Those teeth are coming soon though.
As for me, my spring garden is mostly planted. Lettuces, pak choi, sugar snap and snow peas are all planted. Still need to get the spinach and green onions in though. It is a challenge to work on the garden with an infant, but he is increasingly happy to be worn by mama or sit in his chair while I garden.
I have had two good horse riding lessons in the last couple of weeks. The teen who's horse I ride is happy to watch Kai while I ride, which is a lovely arrangement for both of us. She isn't very experienced with an infant so young though, so
nbarnes comes out to the barn to help and give her lessons in the various care and comforting methods needed. I have been sore for the last two weeks as it seems to take me about a week for my muscles to recover from the previous ride. :) Still, I am delighted to be back in the saddle again.
Oh yes, I nearly forgot. Kai laughed for the first time on May 1st. The easter bunny came and left him a giraffe hand puppet. Oh boy does he like it! He interacts with it as if it were a person. It has a very long tongue, that hides when we close the mouth, then seems to pop out a bit when we suddenly open the mouth wide. He giggles in response and thinks that is the most wonderful trick. Then the tongue often licks his face, causing a fresh spate of giggles. Happy, happy boy. I'll try to get a picture of that interaction for next time.
