i'm not an expert, but i DO know you should never put them in the sticky/static page photo albums.
my recommendation would be to get the high quality, full-sized plastic sleeves or photo-compartment type pages and put the photos in there for the time being. then, store them in a sealed bag or plastic container. it will keep the dust and air (and bugs) off them at least.
Agreed on the scan them first. Then I'd sort them into one of those shoe box sized non acidic photo/video saver boxes... with index cards to separate groupings...
Since they're so much bigger, place them in folders/dividers of a non acidic nature (try Michael's or other crfat store) and then place them in a portable file: probably something plastic that seals to prevent insect or water damage. Keep in a climate controlled area (not an attic or garage)
Scanner of appropriate size: Kinko's. Tell them what you want to do. They'll do it for you. They can even make (regular paper, at least) full-size copies for ya.

And non-acidic paper/folders for storage. Cool dry place. Keep bugs out.
