After we observed that we were the only house on our street with no Christmas lights, I just finished putting some up. Only one strand, and the bright orange extension cord looks kinda ghetto, but I'm still proud of myself. Other than around an apartment balcony one year, I've never put up Christmas lights before.

During our walk this evening, my wife and I noticed that most blocks in our Los Angeles neighborhood have one or two houses with lights at most.

I actually wondered aloud if people who lived in the central US felt pressure to put up lights because the majority of their neighbors had them up.

(For the record, when I lived in Oklahoma, Christmas lights were the year-round primary lightsource in my apartment.)

I think it varies by neighborhood. When I lived in LA, most people in my neighborhood had lights.

...

And it made us feel like we needed to decorate, but we never did.
