Lily stepped out of the green-tinged mist to find James leaning on the bonnet of a red convertible, and she began to cry. At the sound of her sobs he turned his head towards her and a strange look, somewhere between a smile and a grimace, spasmed across his face. When she reached him she grabbed his hand and held on as tightly as she could, and he cupped her cheek with his other hand. His voice, usually so deep and reassuring, shook a little. "I was hoping I wouldn’t see you here, not now."

She shook her head as the tears continued to roll down her face. "I was so scared I wouldn’t be able to find you."

He dropped his hands to her waist and pulled her closer, kissing her on the forehead. "I would’ve waited for you. Forever."

She buried her face in his shoulder and they stood there, James stroking Lily’s hair, until her tears subsided.

"What are we supposed to do?"

He shrugged. "I’m not sure."

She looked around properly for the first time and realised that there was nothing around them except for the green mist behind and a single road that stretched out towards the horizon. "I don’t think we’re supposed to stay here."

He nodded in agreement. "Mmm, I don’t think we are."

"Where did the car come from?"

"Dunno. It was there when I got here."

"Have you got the keys?"

"I think they’re in the ignition."

"You never learnt how to drive, did you?"

"Nah, I didn’t." He turned to look at the car. "For some reason, I don’t think it’ll matter."

She gently disentangled herself and walked around to the driver’s side. "It’s OK, I’ll do it."

She pulled her door open as James simply vaulted his and settled himself into the passenger seat. Lily reached down to the keys but before she could start the car James leant over to still her hand. "What about Harry?"

She closed her eyes, then looked longingly back to the mist she’d come out of. "He’ll be OK."

"How d’you know?"

"I just have to believe it."

He took a deep breath, then leant back into his seat, which began to vibrate gently as the engine came to life.

She looked over enquiringly to his side of the car. "Is there a map in the glove box?"

He smiled a little. "I don’t think we’ll need one, do you?"

She followed the road with her eyes until it was swallowed the star-strewn sky. "No," she said, "I suppose not."

"D’you know where we’re going, though?"

"Haven’t got a clue." She stepped on the accelerator. "Let’s find out, shall we?"

James reclined his chair back and leant his feet up on the dashboard, staring up at the stars and gazing in awe at how far the road seemed to stretch on in front of them. He could feel his wife next to him, radiating heat like a small sun, and he knew his son would be safe - there were too many people who loved him to believe otherwise. It was just the two of them and the road now, and they had all the time they could imagine. "Yeah," James said smiling properly for the first time since Lily had come, "let’s."
