I love abandoned buildings. They're really wonderful for wildlife. One of the reasons a lot of people won't take them on and renovate is because they're not used by humans so wildlife does use them. The reduced number of agricultural buildings and a habit to use all available space in houses has meant that those animals that naturally cohabit with humans often find the abandoned sites to be really useful housing. You get a much wider range of life in an abandoned site than in arable farmland. Brownbelt land is often the most valuable for ecology. Deconstructing buildings when humans have stopped using them would not actually be good. The buildings create a range of habitat as opposed to just grassland that turns to scrub and then becomes woodland.

Also somehow we would all end up paying for the buildings to be removed. A lot of old buildings being destroyed were built by the government.

I also don't think they're necessarily unattractive and it's fascinating to visit them.
