PR S13 Ep 5

This challenge is: Heidi has nothing to wear and she needs a red carpet look. Since the look has already been on the red carpet and splashed across some fashion blogs, I already know which one won. But okay. “Unexpected, fashion forward, fearless.” And blinking with crystal and Christmas lights. JUST KIDDING.

To be honest, as I’m editing/retyping last night’s thinky thoughts which were originally put down as I watched, I found this episode quite boring. There was a definite split of people who got it and got the right fabric/style off the bat, and people who had no clue and flailed and failed quite badly. I’ll discuss the (non) solution to this when we get to it, but it didn’t work, and I’m not sure what the point was because a fix should have allowed some last second successes that narrate wonderfully - and nothing like that happened! Okay, maybe Sandhya, but not really.

To start, Tim comes into the workroom. Everyone is scared of Heidi. They’re given Heidi’s past looks - every single one is plunging neckline, mermaid-type line, tight tight tight. Tim says, “She’s not married to any particular kind of look.” Yeah, right. Maybe if the contestants were given more explicit instructions this would have gone better - I think they’re just supposed to know, although by now, to be perfectly honest after thirteen seasons of this show? they probably should.

They go to Mood. Some people have good ideas, some people are choosing ugly colors. On return, Sandhya starts painting green splotches on a gold dress. Ugly.

Heidi arrives! “I’m wearing this so it better be good.” And then she laughs maniacally. As she walks through, Kristina, Char, Mitchell, Sandhya, and Korina all get the sour-lemon face. Heidi is disappointed. Others are more promising. Korina cries.

Heidi leaves, quite upset, but then returns to announce that the bad designers need to return to Mood if they think they can pull something out of their ass in five hours. You get a hundred bucks, but you can snag others’ money if people decide not to go. Sandhya’s all over that and I’m not sure why no one else is cuz she ends up getting insanely expensive fabric that of course looks great, draping this amazing black stuff over the original green/shiny. See, that’s probably the best approach and why she’s ultimately successful.

Korina cries a lot. She and Kristine discuss how red carpet is just not their thing, but Kristine has a much healthier attitude, “Yeah, but, that’s the challenge, isn’t it?” Mitchell’s not happy about having to switch his fabric. Korina is going emerald silk - didn’t Heidi just warn someone about that color green? Sandhya gets her sparkly black. Emily stayed in the workshop and thinks it’s unfair that the others got a second chance, but honestly, some people have to completely redesign their entire looks, so it’s not really helping (I think Emily wants to say “Sandhya” but isn’t). Mitchell criticizes Sandhya for taking advantage of the cash grab from the other designers who didn’t use their bucks to spend over $400 - and Char laughs, “hey, good for her for taking advantage.” Bet Mitchell wishes he’d thought of it. He’s really struggling with the red.

Onto the Runway.

Guest: Olympic medalist Lindsey Vonn? Why? Shouldn’t it be someone in fashion? Oh, god, the judges so far this year have totally sucked.

Char: Not bad. For once I like a Char design! Good neckline. Makes the model look like she's hauling around a ton of fabric, tho.

Emily: Way too short. But it is totally Heidi, which is why I'm wincing while looking at it. Very glittery black. Plunging back.

Mitchell: Red dress. Zac looks very WTF. Badly made, very generic. Oh, god, he’s gonna be in the bottom.

Korina: Unfitted, bad green, badly sewn. Another bottom.

Fade: Oooh, pretty! God I love him. Stripes which short skirt but train. Very pretty. Should be in the top.

Alexander: Black, looks quilted. Very very short black skirt. I hate that reverse mullet look - why did he think that would look good.

Sandhya: I like it. The fabric is gorgeous. Cut well, nice plunging. Good job, good colors, but then she was the one who benefited from the accommodation, wasn’t she? With this challenge, her sneaky nature is starting to show - she definitely knows how to take care of herself! Will she turn into a true villain? Oh, god, only if that doesn't officially turn Amanda into a saint, blech.

Samantha: Black. Not a fan of the side train. But okay. Meh.

Kristine: BOOBS. Falling out. Cocktail length, hm. Trashy. Bottom.

Kini: Nice. Back glitter, mermaid, open back. Okay.

Sean: Blue and black string dress. Very, very pretty, great swing with fringe. Kind of a wow thing - good for him.

Amanda: Blue and black shiny, very home-ec. Ugh. Better than others, should be safe. God, please don’t like this again, judges.

Best/worst: Kini, Mitchell, Kristine, Korina, Sean, Amanda. Amanda. Seriously, what is wrong with them, why do they keep choosing her over Fade, who is so obviously better? Of course, his look is tasteful and impeccable, and we’re talking Heidi here. In fact, if PR is ultimately geared to accommodate Heidi’s test, that would explain a lot.

Kini: Old Hollywood, glamour. Heidi loved it. She loved the open back drama after the closed front. Nina: it’s cut well and a good body hug. Zac says it’s his highest score, he loves it.

Amanda: Went with unexpected and fearless. Elegant evening gown with your signature. Heidi likes it. Zac thought it looked like a beaded curtain, but fits well. Zac doesn’t like Amanda, but for some reason he’s being completely neutralized and I don’t know why. I want to know what he thinks of Fade. Nina likes how it’s not predictable. She says Heidi will stand out. Nina also sounds reluctant - but is that my own projection? But if I’m right, why is Amanda being Gretchened so hard? (I heard Amanda described as “arts and crafts” elsewhere - yes, this.) But seriously, Zac and Nina were practically swallowing their own tongues as they gave out "compliments" for this. What the hell is going on?

Kristine: Boobs! With a devil-horned bodice. Seriously, bad. Zac thought the side look with the paneling was good, but it’s indecent. Nina thinks the idea is good, but it’s badly executed. Heidi crinkles her nose.

Mitchell: Another red, another wrong. Heidi: Lots of things bad in this dress. Not flattering. Nina loves red, but this red makes her look like a Xmas ornament. Mitchell admits it’s not his best. Zac feels he was out of his element.

Sean: Daring, fringe is good, color great. Zac loves the dress. Nina at first was worried the fringe might make the model look too big, but the bare back balances it out. Heidi: likes the back a lot, loves the way the fringe cut was handled.

Korina: Nina thinks it’s so cliché. Why not a jumpsuit or something? So old-lady. Heidi: Wrong color, bad dress, the hem is cut all wrong, and Zac says the back is a disaster. It’s boring and badly cut and the color is awful.

Sean is the winner. Yay! He needed a win. Kini’s very disappointed - you can see it on his face. Always a bridesmaid.

Auf’d: Mitchell is out. Kristine is also out. Korina is in. Barely. Of course they keep the weepy whiner and get rid of Kristine, who at least had a backbone. Bad choice, but I’m not surprised. This challenged sucked.

No Tim save!

That was about right, except for Amanda again and Korina over Kristina. Fade should have ben in the top. Final assessment: Boring.
