Project Runway Episode 8

Sep 12, 2014 17:08

So, yeah, Tom and Lorenzo ranted best, so go check out their post on this mess. Here are my comments on last night's episode, typed up as I watched:

Okay, so, I’m gonna need you all to fill in the blanks here. I’ve been struggling with migraines all summer and have only now begun to get them under control - still, I had one yesterday that was less cognitive dissonance and more intense headache and lethargy, so my commentary may be missing some interesting comments, Timisms, etc.

But okay, avant garde and a runway in the rain. OH COME ON. Really. What designer would EVER ruin their fabric? And are we talking avant garde with non-perishable material? Well, okay, I'm sure someone would, but this is what we get when we can't get straightforward awesome designs.

But holy shit, Samsung's Avant Garde? You do realize that's an oxymoron? I mean, seriously, has this show so sold out that it's basically serving up the best of rebel fashion culture and presenting it to be sold out to global corporate fucking?

Apparently so.

So, the Samsung Avante Garde challenge!

Anyway, the designers are all running to Mood's vinyl section, and Sandhya is going BACK to yellow! But pairing it with parrot-themed colors, okay. That's what I expected her to do last time - multi-color that yellow.

The editors are focusing on Emily who is fired up - and Fade unfortunately, who is not. Oh, no, after weeks of ignoring him, that's a very bad sign. He seems, well, fading away. I admit, however, I'd hardly be fired up if I had to design an outfit inspired by a Samsung curved TV. Of all the ungodly sell-outs… *sigh* Notice how Fade is wearing jewelry and t-shirts all trumpeting "Aetheist!" Hahahah good for you Fade, there's some REAL rebel chic! And, seriously, isn't it bad enough that they've corporate logo-ed avant garde fashion, as if that isn't bad enough, they've assigned it to a television screen. TV set art went out last decade - you can see it on the second floor at MoMA.

Sean’s doing some bleeding color thing? Oh, god here comes the insulting audience twitter poll - do you think Sean’s being too risky? CLUE IN IDIOTS IN TWO DAYS NOBODY CAN DO ANY REAL AVANT GARDE. So no, as 70% of the morons responding say, he’s not being too risky, and right now I’m really wondering about that other 30%. They’re probably off buying Samsung flat screens… oh, excuse me, curved screens.

Tim visits:

Doesn’t Emily do this silhouette like Malevolent come to life every time?

What is Amanda doing? Tim doesn’t know either.

Char has a reptilian boa. I think that looks cool, actually.

Kini’s doing something with upside down umbrella like things.

Tim has the “I don’t think so” face on for Fade. Oh dear. Ominous music is playing in my head.

Sandhya: Tim has the face again. He’s dubious. She’s making a colorful jumpsuit. And tacking pinwheels on it. O...kay.

You know Tim’s thinking Korina with her “thunderbird” with wings thing is all kinds of lame - she’s lucky she’s safe.

On day two, Korina hates her design. It looks like an Olympic bobsledder. Of course, she doesn't really have time to change it.

Fade should have put his “atheist” protest logos on his stuff, instead of just on himself. Do y'all think this is some veiled protest? That would be better than anything else going on on the show tonight. Still not sure what’s up with his outfit. It’s something graphic? A play button? But the material is just a t-shirt dress or something. Oh, Fade, that's not edgy, and doesn’t seem particularly avant-garde. The others’ looks seem just over the top and just kind of loopy. I fear this is Fade’s last runway - which may explain his editing tonight.

Guest judge: Some actress.

Judging:

Kini: very clever avant garde look. Nina thinks it’s sublime. They all love it.

I like it, but it's very French dominatrix couture on top, isn't it?

Korina: Look of lightning, thunderbird. Heid’s not impressed. Looks flimsy. Zac thinks it’s lackluster.

That's just sad. She had an idea and no execution. The judges said it: she's lucky she's safe. There's nothing underneath that metal stuff, and if you want thunder-wings, you need way more oomph than that.

Sandhya: Pinwheels. Heidi was happy with it. It’s fun. Very Sandhya. The guest judge thinks it needs to come up a notch to be translatable to real life. Nina thinks it’s at a “tipping point” - the garment part needs to come up a notch.

I like the garment idea but again, not the execution. I don't get the pinwheels, they just seem like she thought, I need something weird. It all seems tacked on, but at least it's interesting to look at.

Fade: Nina thinks it’s gimmicky. Heidi thinks it’s not strong enough. Uh oh, they’re bored. No playfulness.

Well, for once I kind of agree. This is sad. If he was going to do electronics, why didn't he DO something with it? The garment is completely disconnected from the concept. I do like the color combo.

Sean and his dress of a different color: Heidi likes how it came to life in the rain.

It's a neat trick, and it worked out well. But so what? There's nothing to the white dress base and the color was surprising, but it's kind of drab. Hardly a rainbow effect.

Emily: Cliché of a fashion show. Not impactful enough. Nina thinks it’s dated. Heidi didn’t hate it so much, but it’s really predictable.

She really does have a look; as the judges say, from 2000. The following comment is in honor of yesterday's anniversary - the world came crashing down in 2001 and the 21st c. is an entirely different animal. Get with it, honey.

The judges liked Amanda's, I can't remember exactly what they said:

This made me think of a centipede. It's got a central idea and interesting execution, which is more than I can say for a few of the others.

With Char and Alexander, these are eye-catching, but there is really nothing to them: Char -

And Alexander:

Final judging: Too bad Korina’s safe. Fade’s doomed. And it’s a shame, because he’s had so many great pieces, so now he’s been uninspired for one time, and they just ignore him. Wonder why they never really considered him at all?

Anyway, Tom and Lorenzo said it and I'll echo it here: The judges hated Emily's dress because it was derivative and dated and they loved Kini's because it was derivative of McQueen. And then they split the win between Sean's dress - which had nothing to it but the dye trick - and Kini which was simply a consolation. Yes, Kini's was the best of the bunch, but only because no one else knew what the hell they were doing, and he copied someone else's style.

Fade's gone. Do I need to say that? And it's as I feared; Tim tossed away his save and should have saved it for a talented designer instead of one he felt sorry for.

And as a final piece of trumped up drama, the editing highlighted Sandhya in the waiting room, pointing out that she doesn't think it's a compliment to be told by the judges that one's look is McQueen, McQueen McQueen! because she's totally unique. And Korina - Korina! - bitching that that's bitchy. It's true, but we gotta try to drum up some drama here, don't we?

So my fave Fade is gone and we're left with a watered-down avant garde corporatization. Joy.

And for one last comment. Remember this? Can you imagine any designer in this season coming out with this?
