I missed posting the last episode - I’m having difficulty finding time between family holidays and work. However, I have now made time!
mmmorpheusq, you inspired me!
Pics/comments are under the cut.
So it sucks that Chris is gone, when there are designers on the runway not at all as talented. But we move on!!
So this episode, Nina wants the designers to design a party dress. People are still terrified of her. As Dmitry puts it, “You know who doesn’t like Nina? People who suck.” Hee! With Chris no longer on the scene, he and Sonjia are my new faves.
And we must have product placement! Tell me, readers, is that Zale rep the stiffest person you have ever seen in your life? I’m pretty sure his face was frozen in one expression:
And his delivery wasn’t a whole lot better. I’m proud-to-introduce-to-you, each word measured and receiving the exact same inflexion as the last. I bet ol’ Scott Davies (yep, and is that not the most generic name ever?) was embarrassed watching it back.
So the Past, Present and Future diamond collection from Zales, and you have to design a dress that represents your own past, present and future love story. Party dress - No black or white! And then winner gets $10,000.00 from Zales and a pendant worth $15,000.00.
Okay, that’s exciting for them.
Here are the results for us.
First, Alyssa looks like a present you place under the tree:
That’s very shiny and round.
Nina’s the judge instead of Georgina, who’s missing again. Hmm… Oooh, speaking of missing judges, what do you all think of the return of Fashion Police with Kathy Griffin? I personally think that has possibility and I like Kathy. But why oh WHY is George leaving?! And being replaced by that awful Brad personality, ugh.
Anyway.
The other judges include another annoying blogger and Seth Aaron, an annoying past contestant. I mostly ignore them from here on out.
Onto the runway!
Dmitry:
It’s cute. As the model goes down the runway, the other designers comment, “Dmitry’s first vinyl,” and he replies, “Yeah, I’m not a virgin anymore,” and everyone cracks up. Because yeah, Dmitry looks like he seriously screws around, I’m not gonna lie. It’s cute. So's he.
Sonjia:
She was stressing but ended up with bright blue underclothes revealed by a lace overlay. It’s simple, but good simple. Here's a close-up.
Benjamin:
I tried to capture a pic that showed the really nice flow of the fabric on the dress, but I like the shot I got because I think it captures the problems. When it’s not at rest, it has no shape. I do like the flowy thing - but that might be because I suspect I’m on my way to a second gypsy/hippie fashion thing in the next few years.
Here’s another view:
It walks wonderfully with poof and flow, but now that I’ve still-framed it, the cut doesn’t quite work. I don’t know what to think about this one. What do you all think of it? Maybe not the baby blue underneath gold? Something like red or bright orange or might have popped more.
Jay:
Again, not sure what to think of this. The fabric is kind of cool, but the silver trim with the purple piping trim - hm, not so sure, it kind of looks cheap a bit, maybe? I’m not a fan of the handkerchief hem, at all. It’s played out.
Fabio:
Another hm… There’s something very cute about the dress - I really like the fabric, but I don’t like it with the pastel bib thing going on. I love the way the skirt is cut, though, but I’d love it a lot more with a different fabric. I like the fabric on its own, but I’d like it better in like a funky pair of pants or something. Again, it’s just too cutesy here; that skirt deserves a more mature cloth.
So let me explain why I only have a picture of Kated's skirt; for some reason my computer kept freezing through this runway, and I had to pull up the judge's comments on the television. For some reason I missed getting a pic of her full outfit, so you're just going to have to remember the full outfit cuz it comes up later. Anyway, here's the skirt and the hem.
What is that fabric hanging out on the right side of the skirt doing? And look at that hem. Just, no, ugh.
Justin:
Another no for me. Okay, the cut is cute but fairly standard. Although when the model spun at the end of the runway, the skirt flared ALL the way up and revealed her butt - I don't know if that's interesting good or interesting bad. Anyway, the pattern down the front is print work Justin did by pressing ink on his hand and then pressing it into the dress in the form of the sign language sign for love. Like so:
It looks like someone dropped the dress front-down in the mud. It's just kitschy. But I suppose that's what love kind of IS, no?
Michelle:
I chose this shot because it highlights that sleeve, which is poofy and lacey? Not working for me, not with that high top, it looks very old. Of course the skirt is nice and short, but with those bindings, it’s all so… stuffy? Something. Actually up close the those are ribbons with little bows, or are they buckles? that's cute tho. I can appreciate the work anyway. (Sorry, I couldn’t get a body shot that was both good AND clear, and again, my computer froze and I lost the wider view.)
Samantha:
Not a fan of the silver with the yellow, but that mustard color is ugly.
Helen:
Sorry, I couldn’t get a better shot. It’s fine, the skirt is bland, the color is good, but I kept wanting to tug up those sleeves:
Oh, I missed Gunnar! His was pretty much a mess, and here is a front and back shot. That skirt was crazy:
So the Zales people, even though they don’t have a representative actually at the runway, decided to give everyone $1000.00 to gift cards to everyone because the company is so impressed with the results, which they haven’t actually seen. Hey, the more stuff the better, right?
Michelle, Justin, Sam, Jay, Fabio are all safe.
Judging:
The judges love Sonjia’s lace overlay. Edgy modern from Nina, Isaac loves the back, “Diviyeen!”
Gunnar: Isaac likes that it’s shaped like a heart but the asymmetry is a mess. The back is not flattering (blogger says). The judges all agree, it’s not done well. “It’s a mess,” which Gunnar says reflects his love life, but yeah, that's an excuse for crappy construction.
Benjamin: He says the shot of blue is like a dream, the back is a cage and like a trap like love - but the freedom of the fabric is like love’s freedom. Nina says the hem is Project Runway 101. The handkerchief thing is so over.
Helen: Wants vulnerable/armor type idea. Nina thinks its dramatic, and the sleeves are beautiful. They all like it. It’s powerfully romantic. Okay.
Kate: She says the silhouette of the dress is inspired by the innocence in the early days of meeting her husband whom she apparently met in the delivery room right after each of them was born, and they have been together ever since. Yeah, good excuse for the same ol’ idea, although she had a baby doll cut and changed it which was probably a mistake. Color inspired by Florida where they’re from. The blogger and Seth like the top, but the bottom sucks. Isaac wants to know what Florida has to do with the color, and Kate says something about the beach and how the air feels, and Isaac says, “Oookay.” I hate to say it, but I get what she’s getting at - that warm quiet ocean sky, very very light blue, almost whitish. Which Isaac says, the color is more neutral, but I think she just didn't explain it well. It doesn't matter in any case - Nina thinks the color is sad. And it’s worse, Nina says, because Kate's model is "next to the Ferrari."
“Onto the Ferrari!” Alyssa says and we move onto Dmitry's model. Nina says it’s sharp, fiery, sexy, impeccable. Isaac thinks it’s amazing, but the flounce and butt are too housewives of something - Nina thinks it’s flirty! But Isaac thinks a straight skirt would have made it off the Paris runway. Seth loves it. I’m ignoring the blogger who basically nods along with everyone.
Helen wins! Really? I keep shrugging every time I look at that dress. But fine, whatever, I wasn’t a fan of any of them, although they way the judges were talking, I was kind of expecting Dmitry to win. Guess the diamond pendant wouldn't have suited him?
But thank goodness they got rid of Kate. So in a competition with a lot of meh, I guess the elimination was the point.
What did you all think?
