I agree with all of this except for the term grok. It was coined by Robert Heinlein in the 1960s. If it's trendy now, that is sort of a shame ;-)

(And we can disagree about that--I am happy with convivial disagreement!)

"Grok" is HEINLEIN?

Wow. Didn't know. I thought it was the product of snot-nosed geek-think, because whenever I've seen it used it had that "see how trendy I am" sort of smell to it. :-)

I stand corrected, now that I correctly grok its origins, although I will still probably not use it as a regular matter of course. :-)

Yep: Heinlein. Which makes it automagically cool, even if all the whippersnappers don't really know what that means.

...so strange that a neo-hippie as groovy as you wouldn't grok "grok" (how about that, verb and noun in same sentence!) You must drag out the dog-eared, yellowed copy of "Stranger in a Strange Land" from your parents' attic archives.

But not before you fix the date on your computer, which indicates you're writing in this blog four years from now. Maybe you've already been reading Heinlein?

It's probably a battery on the motherboard (if you were using a Mac anyway). When that battery gets low, it does strange things like reset the date. Only usually backwards, not forwards. Maybe that's a bit of Michael Dell's wishful thinking?

i don't get it. Why do you have to do that? My daughter's blog is on live journal, and hers always shows the most recent entry at the top. Pretend (i said, pretend!!) that I'm the stupidest person in the blogosphere, and help me grok the 411.

That's just it--I want this one to STAY on top, and not have more recent ones go on the journal above it, so that this will be the first one people find. As I write new (correctly dated) entries, they will go in right after this one, and this will stay at the top of my LJ.

(I should be so stupid...)

May I ask what the co-composer of Stranger and the Nets' livejournal address is? (I still remember that great evening a few years ago when I rudely glommed onto your family--she's AWESOME. You have a very cool daughter.)
