PROLOGUE

“Ge!” Zhoumi shouted from afar, though muffled by the heavy rain pouring from the gloomy sky. He was running awkwardly over to the older boy because the water soaked the hem of his jeans and the wind blew against his direction; threatening to topple over the small boy with the help of the umbrella he was holding.

Hangeng just kneeled down on the floor, his sniffles and tears blended with the rain that was drenching him from head to toe. The small rocks on the ground beneath his knees cut through his pants and would have usually stung really badly. But Hangeng wasn’t crying from that; the stinging was nothing compared to the pain in his heart; the pain of loss and the pain from being helpless.

When Zhoumi got to his side, he quickly knelt down beside him and made sure the umbrella was over Hangeng’s head. He didn’t want to older boy to get any more drenched than he really was. Zhoumi’s mother told Zhoumi to go after Hangeng because Hangeng listens to Zhoumi; he loved Zhoumi like his real brother so Hangeng always showed a good role as an older brother. Zhoumi’s mother figured, sending Zhoumi was the best idea. Besides, she had to take care of baby Henry at home.

“Mi-ah…” Hangeng said finally, after ten minutes of sobbing. Zhoumi wrapped his gangly arms around, still making sure the umbrella was above them. Hangeng was shaking, his entire body shook like a blender, Zhoumi could hear the harsh sobs from Hangeng and Zhoumi couldn’t help but to cry along. What was a kid to do when faced with such situation? Seeing Hangeng break down was already shocking enough to Zhoumi because Hangeng was always really tough and helped Zhoumi whenever he was bullied at school.

Hangeng was Zhoumi’s pillar of strength and seeing the pillar crumble, Zhoumi became of the broken pieces.

“They are gone, Mi. G-gone…” Hangeng said; his voice rattled as the cold was getting to his senses. His body shook more violently against Zhoumi’s thin frame. Zhoumi pulled him in tighter, trying to calm down the boy, but it wasn’t working; Hangeng’s body wouldn’t stop shaking. Suddenly, Hangeng hissed, through his teeth.

“I’m going to get whoever did this!”

Hangeng had gotten really ill with fever after that morning and all he kept mumbling every time Zhoumi changed the towel on his forehead was, “I’ll kill them.”

From that day onwards, Hangeng was a different person, a very quiet boy even if he would always smile as if nothing was bothering him if Zhoumi asked. He spoke very few and never gave up in anything he did. He was also really close to Henry and Zhoumi and watched him like a real brother would.

To Zhoumi and the unknowing baby Henry, Hangeng was their real brother. A real Ge who they could always count on no matter what. Zhoumi’s family took Hangeng in as their son and didn’t object when Hangeng was eighteen and asked to study abroad in Korea. They figured it was for the best, for Hangeng to leave a place that held so much pain during Hangeng’s childhood.

Zhoumi joined Hangeng in Seoul, South Korea when he turned eighteen, and became a cop. That time, Hangeng was living with a Korean man named Heechul in an apartment.

The very apartment where Hangeng was standing in front of, a gun in hand pointing directly at the son of the man Hangeng wanted to kill.

Hangeng would take care of the rest later, claim that he fired because the man looked suspicious and tried to fight off an officer even after Hangeng told that he was a cop and he had his rights and all the standard procedures. He would then ask Yesung to tamper with the CCTV.

But, what if Heechul saw the scene and recognized Siwon?

He could close the scene right away and prohibit Heechul or anyone from coming out, with excuse that it would be obstructing police work. Or Hangeng could blow off his face with the one shot.

Yes, that was it. Hangeng’s impromptu plan was set.

Suddenly the silence got broke off by the beeping of the apartment door, not the neighbors’, but Heechul’s very apartment door.
