La Frontera

I've been thinking about our current debate on immigration for a while now, but I've been hesitant to write anything because I think at some level it's all smoke and mirrors. We need the workers, we've got a massive population of poor folks to the south of us (whose poverty the U.S. has had a hand in creating and maintaining) - they're coming. Game ( Read more... )

Thanks for this insight & perspective; I think you capture something about the border that most Americans not living in the borderlands profoundly don't get. Perhaps only in countries as large as the U.S. and Canada can we abstract the border so completely (perhaps this might be applicable to countries such as the UK & Japan for geographical reasons, but I digress). As historians, we know that this is the same bullshit scapegoating since large-scale Irish immigration in the mid-19th century. That said, you've hit it on the head that about the *current* pernicious, immoral bullshit we're facing.

I think you're right about the smoke and mirrors. I also think that our beloved dicator doesn't know or care about the real life situations along our southern border. He's doing so poorly in the polls because of the war, that he needs to create a situation where he looks good, tough, pro-American. In the mean time, real lives are disrupted. But since they don't donate millions to his campaign funds, they're expendable. And seeing what pussies the democrats are being, I'm not so sure they'd be much bette.

Actually, I don't think Bush created this one - he promised Vicente Fox early in his presidency to improve conditions for Mexican immigrants, documented and not, and he has always stayed on the side of the business Republicans on this one. I think his proposals are bad, but he's not as bad as the folks who want to make it a felony to be in this country without papers.
I wonder, too, if anyone's really thought about what it's going to be like to have to present their 'papers' to any authority who asks. Doesn't sound very American, does it?
