I need an audition piece for a part in a film. It can be anything. I am completely stuck...anyone have any suggestions?
Also, more Israel stories can be found
Saturday, being Shabbat, was a very good day for sleeping. I thought I would get up for services, but I did not wake up until 12:30, right before lunch. Which I made it to, barely, given I insist upon being clean. The afternoon was lovely: swimming pool, the Israeli version of Uno, which is called Taki, and is really fun. More fun. Though that may have just been the people I was playing with. What else? Not too much, I think.
Before sunset, we set out to walk to a bird observatory located in the middle of the city, between the important government buildings. On the way over, I saw a sign for an Irish pub, in English and Hebrew, with a Guiness toucan, by the road next to a building that fit in perfectly with the rest of Jerusalem and looks nothing at all like an Irish pub. I took a picture, it looks pretty cool.
After the bird observatory (I did not see any birds, and had a frustrating time with my camera on account of my hands are not near as steady as a tripod) we walked by the Israeli parliament, and had Havdallah in the park. More of a large group of Jews standing in a circle singing. Good fun. This is also where we met Roni, the new tour guide.
Then, on the bus again (Shabbat being over) and off to the Old City! We took a different route this time, by some stone walls that were built, I think, by the Romans but possibly earlier or later. Regardless of who built them, they were very pretty. A friend who was in Israel I think over ten years ago said they were still excavating the wall when he was there. They have, since it was first built and later excavated, added hand rails along the high walkway on the wall, not that this prevented me from falling down the stairs anyway. I didn't feel too silly about it seeing as it was bloody OLD stone and enough people walking on it over the years could of course make it slippery.
That's just what I have to keep telling myself...
Anyway, we eventually got to the Kotel, where I waited and waited for the wind to unfurl the flag so I could get a good picture of it. This did not happen. Had more fights with my camera in an attempt to get a good picture of the Dome of the Rock, which did not happen. Watched the Black Hats and talked about history.
After the Kotel, we got on the bus again and went to a more modern and fashionable district of Jerusalem. On the way over, I talked to Dan, one of the Israelis, about hiking. Good conversation. At this street that was our destination, we were dropped off and given...FREE TIME. So much unstructured time in one day! This place reminded me very much of NW 23rd, in Portland, and a little bit of Belltown, in Seattle. Perhaps a combination of the two. With a dash of Hawthorne added in.
We found a burger place and watched a World Cup game, though now I can't remember who was playing.
Knowing what was to come the next day after multiple warnings from our intrepid group leaders, I went to sleep very soon after getting back, resulting in much teasing and pestering from one friend, who thought I should not really need sleep at all. But I'm glad I got the sleep I did--it turned out I really did need it.
The next day was very big, and very, very intense, so I will save a fuller description for another time, but, to summarize briefly, it included:
Yad Vashem (Holocaust museum)
Mount Herzl National Cemetary
Long Bus Ride
Ecology Lecture
Arrival in Tiberias, on the Sea of Galilee.
I need to find something to do until I am employed. I'm getting slightly crazy and missing my bicycle (which is not mine) very, very much.
