There's a saying down South that God created palm trees and spanish moss in order to indicate to people where He wanted them to live ( Read more... )

If you get an ice storm, just don't go anywhere. Driving on ice is the dumbest thing anyone could do. It's just not worth it. As I said below, snow is easier than ice because you can SEE it.

When I'm done (finally) TAing for him, I'll put up a post detailing my true feelings for the man. It won't be too pretty. :)

Yeah, we get those horrendous ice storms in Georgia too. Only in Georgia we're smart enough to close everything when they hit, and I mean everything. During one of those storms, a tree definitely did come crashing through my bedroom when I was little, but fortunately I was safely tucked in my parents' bedroom, where we had all huddled around a tiny kerosene lamp for heat because the electricity was out. {sigh}

The snow would be pretty, if the damn sky weren't so gray. Blech. I need to get back to the east coast. Now.

I'm sorry!
Whenever I drive in unsafe conditions, I pray the Rosary. In the wee hours of Thanksgiving, I drove home from Paul's house in Suffolk County during a (mild) ice storm. I said 6 Rosaries, and I was fine!

If you start to fishtail (ie, the back part of your car swings out in the midst of a turn), don't fight it. Don't brake, don't try to spin your wheel the opposite direction. Just go with the slide. It's the only thing you can do. If you are moving slowly, you'll stop in a couple of feet, none the worse for the experience.

Always always always give the car in front of you LOTS of room. If he brakes you have time to brake as well. If you slide, you may not hit him. (Depends on how fast you're going.) If someone is tailgating you, ignore them. Focus on driving slowly and safely, and if he hits you...well, he rear-ended you. You are almost never at fault is someone rear-ends you.

I hate driving in snow, too, but it's not nearly as bad as straight ice. You can get some traction on snow, but there's nothing you can do on ice. Plus, you can see snow.

Seriously, you should find an empty parking lot and practice. It will help if you can practice a slow turn so that you can feel how the car reacts. Also, you might consider throwing some sandbags in the back of your car. It will help weigh it down, which will give you more traction.

I like how your picture is completely appropriate to what you wrote. :) I think that's what I'll do in the morning, given that I haven't hit up Home Depot yet to get the sandbags. Please pray for me! The last thing I need right before finals is to be mired in car insurance woes after an accident.
