Apparently. . .

. . . my patriotism doesn't win over everything. I'm rooting for Slutskaya over Cohen. Well, okay, I'm rooting for Meissner and Hughes over them all, but I would still rather see Irina win than Sasha. Don't know why; I just feel like Sasha's such an upstart prima donna. {shrug}

Sasha sort of did it to herself though. She was second fiddle because she kept falling in the big competitions while Kwan tended to skate clean programs. Sasha had a lot of problems the past few years with that and changing coaches. I don't know. It might be nice for Sasha to finally get her chance at the gold this week, but who knows what will happen? She definitely has the talent, guts and athleticism. But I am sort of rooting for Meissner and Hughes just because it would be nice to see the young underdogs upset the seasoned professional skaters like Irina and Sasha.

As someone who consistently feels "not good enough" (whether it's justified or not), I guess I just find something tragically poetic when people try and fail and try and fail again repeatedly. Besides, Sasha herself has been an inconsistent skater. If she's been second fiddle to Kwan, it's because Kwan skated better than she has in many instances! At any rate Sasha just seems so arrogant and cocky and full of herself. She's probably a perfectly nice girl; that's just how she seems when she skates. Figure skaters should be pretty, but whether or not they should be snooty is another question.

Well, I won't be upset if she wins, but I'll be happier if Irina does. I like it when people succeed after trying hard for a really long time. I'll be happiest, though, if one of the young Americans moves up the ranks a la Sarah Hughes. I'm especially cheering for Kimmie Meissner, because she's been so unassuming during this whole affair. She skated such a lovely short program, too!

Yeah, her outfit was pretty tacky. I think she forgot that this is ladies' figure skating. ;) They also had a video clip of a Plushenko performance in which he donned a skirt over his pants. Silly Russians. That's at least one thing I could always count on Michelle Kwan for: a beautiful Vera Wang costume! I really liked Arakawa's. I also liked Meissner's a lot too.

I thought Slutskaya's music was okay, but maybe not the best choice for a figure skating program. And, at the end of the day, no matter how bad I feel for some of the Russian athletes (okay, I admit it, I almost pitied Svetlana Khorkina, until someone smacked me upside the head - one can only take sentimentality so far!), I usually end up being annoyed with their sense of entitlement. They aren't very gracious losers, are they?

Speaking of Svetlana Khorkina, did you know that she had a baby last year? What got to me (other than the fact that any male in his right mind would get that close to her ;) ) is that a month and a half before she was going to have her ( ... )
