I think society does place a lot of shame and guilt into us. We are supposed to be a capitalist society that only cares about the dollar after all. *eye roll*
I'd say it has more to do with paranoia than with guilt. We live in a rather suspicious and paranoid society, and something like Craiglist has been known to have problems in the past. When something is being offered for 'free', a lot of people are going to first ask, "Alright, what's wrong with it, then?"
That second, defensive statement isn't necessarily about guilt. It's more a case of preemptively addressing peoples' paranoia, showing that there's an entirely valid reason that you're getting rid of a perfectly good random item.
