Meltdown

Arrived at the meltdown point. Left campus for a bit to go cry in my room. It's cold everywhere. Inside, outside. The only warm place is our apartment. It's so, so cold. But none of the Irish people quite seem to mind, even though they are saying this is the coldest its ever been here ( Read more... )

Well, of course you're allowed to be a mess, because that all sounds quite horrible and new places are terrifying, but I'm sorry everything's so miserable right now and I hope you feel better soon. I'll beam you encouraging thoughts (and heat). You can do it!

Hey. I also spent a semester at UCC, and I also found it a bit challenging. Now though, I sometimes miss being in Ireland, and I'm sure someday you will too.

Here's my blog post about it, if you're curious:

I actually just got back from the UCC chorla society meeting, and met some great people and had half a pint of Murphy's, so I am feeling much better about the whole experience.

I've never studied abroad, so I have nothing profound to say about that aspect (although it sounds like you're doing a lot better, so that's excellent!), but as far as being cold ( ... )

(Oh yeah, also if I am feeling too cold I buy really self-indulgent food. :P)

That could lead to some dangerous overspending...

It turns out that they turned the heaters off for three weeks, so it should be warming up... slightly. But you're right about insulation.

Luckily, I think the weather is supposed to rise back into the mid forties next week, like it normally is in January.

Have you checked out the bookstores in the City Centre yet? When I was feeling down, they always cheered me up. I'm glad to hear that you feel better; you're going to have a fantastic semester.

I'm getting the fantastic vibe more today, after my really great evening at Choral Society.

Where is the bookstore, and what is it called (is it on Patrick Street?) I need some books to read between classes.

The easiest bookstore to find is called Waterstones. It has two entrances, the main one on Patrick Street, and the other on Paul Street on the way to the Tesco in the Paul Street Shopping Centre. This is the nicest one to hang out in.
There's also a small used bookstore in that same centre (or there was) that's highly disorganized, but has a ton of books. Close by to the Tesco is a store called Vibes and Scribes (there are signs pointing the way); it doesn't have a huge fiction section, but it's a nice store and there's another location on Bridge St. (across the river) that's better, and it sells new and used. Also, farther down Patrick Street, almost to the river, is a place called Eason's.
Those are all that I remember...happy reading!

I saw that used bookstore today! The disorganized one. I almost went in, but had just gone grocery shopping and was lugging my huge bag home.
