Having done a bit of this - basically what rules you set depend on your desired outcome and how crazy you want to be

There is a "Mutual friend in Brussels" right now, who introduced Algie to the Prince of Cats via some fantastic stories, and gave Algie his address. I feel that the Brussels man has invented some fabulous machine to enable trans-time mail service.

I would say, do what works. If you want to discuss plot, discuss plot. I would also say, however, to keep some things close to the vest. How else are you to make your partner giggle madly?
