Back when I read the American Girl books, the most recent were the Molly books that took place in 1944-5.  I go on the American Girl website just for fun today and find that they now have girls from the '70's.  Not the 60's, mind you, which I find interesting.  Maybe they didn't want to put in too many references to the Vietnam war?  Anyway, as I ( Read more... )

Aw that's lame. I guess not too many people have heard about the Russo-Japanese War or the Great Baltimore or Great Toronto Fire or that the Panama Canal had started being built. Or hey, even that CQD was developed and then replaced by SOS two years later.

Yes, I had to look this up, but I was curious to see what transpired in 1904, and holy crap there was a lot. I found this particularly interesting:

-May 5 - Pitching against the Philadelphia Athletics, Cy Young of the Boston Americans throws the first perfect game in the modern era of baseball.

Felicity was always my favourite.

i liked all of them, really, but the Samantha books were the first i read so she has a special place in my heart, haha. i remember they concentrated on the treatment of workers in factories in that series, which is interesting, but perhaps a little depressing for their taste?

at any rate, i look forward to using the proceeds from the sale of my doll in 20 years to retire early to france, mwahahahahaha.

whaaaat? I had Samantha too! and Kirsten. but Samantha first. she had BROWN HAIR LIKE ME. and a teddy bear! and lots of money, but she was friends with the servants! and UNCLE GARD! I LOVED Uncle Gard! the '70s are too recent. it stops with Molly, end statement all stop.

i quite agree about Molly. There should be at least 50 years of distance between an american girl story and the present day. the bear was one of the pieces of merchandise that i never convinced my parents to buy...and yeah, Samantha was cool! Rich, but still tragic because she was an orphan. and i liked that her aunt campaigned for women's rights. woo!
