1 Narrator: Listen you well now to this, our story.
2 Narrator: Of two families' tale of woe not glory.
3 Narrator: In fair Verona we sought the fued
4 Narrator: For many years, the Capulets and Montegues.
5 Montegue: You're stupid!
6 Capulet: You're fat!
7 Montegue: I hate you!
8 Capulet: I hate you more!
9 Montegue: Argh! Die, Capulet!
10 Capulet: You first, Montegue!
11 Priest: Stop! Stop! You must not fight!
12 Narrator: Today there is a party at the Capulet's home. Many people are going to the party.
13 Romeo and his friend are going to the party, too.
14 Romeo: Life is boring without love. I want to be in love.
15 Mercutio: Love is fun. Let's go to the Capulet party. We can meet girls there.
16 Romeo: I am a Montegue. I can't go to the party.
17 Mercutio: Let's wear masks. Then no one will know who we are!
18 Narrator: When Romeo arrives at the party, he sees Juliet.
19 Romeo- Who is she?
20 Mercutio- I don't know.
21 Narrator: The girl is Juliet, the daughter of Capulet.
22 Mercutio- Why don't you talk to her.
23 Romeo- Hello.
24 Juliet- Hello.
25 Romeo- How are you?
26 Juliet- Fine, thank you. Are you enjoying the party?
27 Romeo- I am now.
28 Narrator: Although they had just met, Romeo and Juliet fall in love.
29 Narrator: After the party, Romeo and Juliet want to see each other again.
30 Narrator: Romeo sneaks into the Capulet garden near Juliet's bedroom.
31 Juliet- Romeo, oh Romeo. Where are you?
32 Romeo- It's her! It's Juliet!
33 Juliet- Why do I love you? You are a Montegue, my family's enemy.
34 Romeo- She loves me! My family's enemy loves me, and I love her!
35 Juliet- What should I do?
36 Romeo- Marry me.
37 Juliet- Romeo!
38 Romeo- We can be married tomorrow afternoon.
39 Juliet- Yes, I'll marry you. But you must go now. If my family sees you here, they will kill you!
40 Narrator: Romeo goes home with the promise to meet Juliet tomorrow afternoon. Then they would marry.
41 Narrator: The next day, Romeo and Juliet meet at the church.
42 Priest- You want to be married?
43 Romeo & Juliet- Yes. Please.
44 Priest- A Capulet and Montegue wish to marry.
45 Romeo & Juliet- Yes, sir.
46 Priest- I have waited many years for this to happen.
47 Juliet- Will you marry us?
48 Priest- Yes. Let it be done.
49 Narrator: The priest marries Romeo and Juliet in secret.
50 Romeo- I love you.
51 Juliet- I know. I must go home now.
52 Romeo- I will see you tonight, my wife.
53 Juliet- Tonight, my husband.
54 Narrator: Romeo and Juliet return to their families.
55 Narrator: That same day, Romeo and his friend are walking down the street, laughing loudly.
56 Tybalt- You cowardly pigs.
57 Mercutio- What did you say?
58 Tybalt- Do you want to fight me?
59 Mercutio- Your sword is weak and no match for mine.
60 Narrator: Tybalt is a Capulet, and Juliet's cousin. Romeo does not want to fight with his wife's family.
61 Romeo- Let us go, my friend, and find cleaner air.
62 Tybalt- Do not turn your back to me or you shall taste the bite of my sword!
63 Mercutio- It is you who will taste steel this day!
64 Romeo- No! Mercutio! Don't!
65 Narrator: Romeo tries to stop the two men from fighting, but it is too late.
66 Romeo- Mercutio. Mercutio! You killed him!
67 Narrator: Romeo has killed Tybalt.
68 Priest- Romeo, oh Romeo! What have you done? You've killed your wife's cousin!
69 Priest- Quick! You must run away!
70 Capulet- What is it? What's happening? Tybalt!
71 Montegue- What's wrong? What's going on? Who is it?
72 Capulet- The boy is dead. Your son killed him! Your Romeo!
73 Montegue- Romeo? Romeo did this?
74 Capulet- Yes. And now I will kill him!
75 Juliet- Father, what is it? What is wrong?
76 Capulet- Your cousin is dead. And so now is Romeo!
77 Narrator: Juliet believes her Romeo is dead. Sad and angry, she goes to the priest who married her.
78 Juliet- What should I do?
79 Priest- Don't cry, child. Romeo is still alive.
80 Narrator: The priest has a plan.
81 Priest- Here. Drink this bottle. It will make you sleep.
82 Juliet- Sleep? What good is sleeping?
83 Priest- Your family will think you are dead. Then you and Romeo can meet again.
84 Narrator: Juliet goes home and drinks the potion.
85 Juliet- Romeo, so that we may meet soon.
86 Capulet- Juliet? Juliet! What is this? What has happened? She's dead! Juliet is dead!
87 Narrator: The news that Juliet is dead spreads. Romeo hears it and becomes heartsick.
88 Narrator: He buys a poison and goes to Juliet's tomb.
89 Romeo- My sweet Juliet. Life is too cruel to take you from me.
90 Narrator: But Romeo is not alone.
91 Narrator: A young man who had hoped to marry Juliet is also there to say goodbye to the lovely Juliet.
92 Paris- You! You are a Montegue! A monster!
93 Narrator: Angry, Romeo fights and kills the man. Then he drinks the poison and dies before Juliet wakes up.
94 Juliet- Hello? Is anyone--Romeo! What has happened?
95 Narrator: Juliet sees the bottle of poison and tries to drink it, but Romeo has drunk it all.
96 Juliet- How cruel to leave me like this!
97 Narrator: Then she sees the knife.
98 Priest- Wait! Don't!
99 Narrator: But the priest is too late to save Romeo or Juliet.
100 Priest- Poor Romeo. Poor Juliet.
101 Capulet- What's going on in here? What? Why are you here?
102 Priest- Look, Capulet! And you, Montegue! Look at what has happened because of you!
103 Montegue- Romeo! Why is he here?
104 Priest- Yesterday, Romeo and Juliet came to me to be married.
105 Capulet- What?!
106 Priest- Juliet loved Romeo, and Romeo loved Juliet,
107 Priest- but because their families could only hate each other, now they are dead!
108 Capulet- My daughter is dead.
109 Montegue- My son is dead.
110 Narrator: Montegue and Capulet were very sad.
111 Narrator: They agreed to stop fighting.
112 Narrator: And so here ends our tale of woe
113 Narrator: of Juliet and her Romeo.
And Shakespearians are cringing in horror. We had our first read through Friday night. Already we're cutting and simplifying lines here and there. Desperately writing out the katakana for names and other words. One thing's for sure. The kids'll know "dead" pretty well by the end of this.
