lenihanfighter Character's Name: Soulfire (she can’t remember her real name anymore after years of using this name)
Series: N/A, original character
Age: 117 years old (though she won’t appear to be any older than 30)
Subject: Divination
Character Type: Witch, but proficient in divination as well
Backstory: Soulfire was born in the southern part of Ireland in 1889 as a daughter of a fairly rich family, who owned a factory there. Her father’s family was originally English, but moved to Ireland a few generations ago. Her parents made sure their children received a proper education, and in return expected them to uphold the family honour and do whatever mother and father wanted.
Soulfire, however, had always been drawn to the mystical world and could spent hours in the village listening to folklore, fairies, magic and that kind of things. Her parents laughed at the stories, discarding it as fantasy stories from old, unmarried women, but Soulfire always put a small bowl of sugar and water outside for the fairies and thanked them and that kind of things.
She was around twelve when she first discovered her abilities. Already for a while, there were rumours about a witch living on the white house on the hill and the young girl decided to visit her. For some reason she wasn’t afraid of the witch, unlike everyone else. The woman did turn out to be a witch, but Soulfire soon learned she wasn’t the evil witch who would curse people. Although it went completely against her Catholic education, the girl asked the older witch to teach her how to use her magical abilities.
She got tutored by the witch for three years before the rumours leaked out into the rest of the village. While folk magic was alright, witchcraft wasn’t and the family lost respect because they had a witch in the family. It went down with their business as well and they sold everything and planned to emigrate to America. The last thing Soulfire’s tutor gave her was her current name - Soulfire - and an medallion with a protection spell engraved on it. In it is a small photo of her tutor, herself and a spell to summon a certain creature to protect her, but Soulfire has never used it before and her tutor didn’t tell her what kind of creature.
They moved to America and settled somewhere in the north of America. Soulfire did her best to hide her powers to please her parents and even decided - again to please her parents - to become a teacher. She became officially a teacher in 1913, when she was 24, but when WWI broke out, she abandoned her position, said goodbye to her parents and left to continue studying witchcraft.
And that’s what she has done for the past eighty years or so. She traveled from one country to another, looking up witches, wizards, mages, seers and other people otherwise connected to the magical world.
Then in the past year she heard some things about a school for girls with special abilities. Soulfire did some research and found St. Catherine’s School for girls. Soulfire contacted the school to see if they needed someone and applied for divination, which she still loves more than casting spells or creating potions. And since she has traveled a lot, she has also come across many ways of divination that aren’t very well known. She hopes the girls will enjoy her lessons and that she as well will be able to learn some new things.
Sample LJ Post: Do I really have to~? I’ve got many journals with enough evidence of my ability in RP-ing~ *sighs* Oh well…
Everyone knew it; a new semester equaled new students and sometimes even teachers. This was true for the Divination classes, where on the morning of the first lesson a new teacher entered the class. She had long, curly hair, which was dark reddish brown of colour and fell loosely over her back. Her outfit consisted of a green dress, which might have been in fashion several decades ago, but not anymore. What may have attracted most of all the attention was her wooden staff, which she used for walking, even though she didn’t seem to be all that old.
The woman turned to her class and smiled. “Goodmorning,” she said calmly, her speech slightly accented from her many years she spent in the Balkan countries. “My name is Soulfire and I have come here to help Professor Kaiba out with the divination lessons. As some of you may know already, I will do the more interesting part including tests, while Mr. Kaiba will train you on meditation and concentrating on your visions. I am also a witch, though I can assure you all I know a lot about divination and that there is much for you to learn as well.”
She let her eyes travel through the class. Some were surprised at the fact that a witch could do divination as well; some were looked interested; and others either knew it already or had no interest in the subject at all. It would be challenging to provide that last group with interesting and interactive lessons to keep them from getting bored. But Soulfire smiled. She was certain her lessons would provide enough entertainment.
“Alright then, now that is settled we can start the lessons. I will walk around once you are all busy to learn your names. But let us first concentrate on one of the most popular and well-known form of divination: tarot.”
Preferred Roommate: She’d love to have a roommate, but… you know… *wink* Professors don’t get roommates.
