Ruminations on RPG Romance

Oct 18, 2009 00:22

As soon as I found the most douchetastical haricut in the Dragon Age character creator, I knew the male romance option would have it.

I'd be willing to bet it'll be another series of therapy sessions, too. That's my professional life-- no need to recreate it in a magical world of fantasy, thanks.

Worst thing is, I'll still play through it. And I'll ( Read more... )

It seems to me that whenever game developers come up with a romance plot for a character, I always want the other guy in the damn game ( ... )

I remember being psyched when I heard there was in-game romance in BG2. I didn't read the specifics of who it was, and promptly kicked Anomen out of my part after about his second conversation. Played the whole game wondering where the romance was and couldn't believe it when I found out.

I'm with you on the KotOR stuff, too. I think part of my distaste for the canon-mance options was that I arrived somewhat late in the fandom, and it had already been choked with identi-fics like kudzu vine.

There's Garrus love? Really? Wow, he doesn't seem like your typical squee fodder. Tell me there's Wrex fangirling out there too.

I did a touch of polishing on an old BG2 short with Sarevok and posted it on ff.net--still kinda sucks, like it's half an idea, but what they hey. :)

Thanks for the thoughtful post! I love reading your opinions.

Haha, only in the April Fools chapter. I'm still a little weirded out that people thought I was nuts enough for that chapter to be serious. :)

BG: ANYONE but Anomen. The bald guy with the gerbil from outer space would've been more acceptable. LOL @ Xan. Got to read that one.

Kotor I and II: Carth/Brianna are my (new) OTP and totally not because I wrote a fic with that pairint
I still have lurve for Atton but you know it's all about Bao for me.

Minsc! That was it. "No effect!"

No underwear fight, just some "should we or shouldn't we" angst and one drunken come-on.

So, I tend to gravitate toward the lawful good/open palm/lightsider romance on principle, because that's how I tend to play.. but I agree, Bishop was very intriguing until I realized that playing as a paladin was not getting me any points with him. I'm not done with the game yet, but there is something that bothers me about the romance in that game. In fact, it's the same thing that bothers me about the romance in Kotor - why is it that the love interests for fem!PC are so OLD?? I like Carth, and Casavir's.. well, he's actually pretty boring.. but why don't we get male leads who are more of the young, dashing type? Are we female gamers supposed not to go for that sort of thing?

I haven't played a ton of Bioware games, but surely the male!PC never ends up with a 40-something broad as his romantic interest.. What's the big idea?

I don't pretend to understand my attraction to Charon in Fallout 3 he doesnt talk much and gets in the way when I shoot things and he has the sex appeal of burnt toast :S But yet I find myself drawn to M rated fanfics about him. I think its becuase my one and only serious boyfriend was an asshole who hit me and well, Charon is big and protective and has such a safe vibe...I think I need serious help. I also love Jericho and Albert Wesker becuase well... I fall for evil men because I'm stupid and think I can change them. I think theres probably a fic in that somewhere.

I want to find the person who invented that annoying ass Anomen D'Elryn and stab them, alot. I will always love Minsc becuase hes big, protective...oh wait.

There's really no explaining video game attractions, I think. I'm sorry to hear you've had such a horrible experience, and glad to hear you're writing about it in past tense.

I must admit that Jericho cracked me up. If he didn't die on me every 3 seconds I would have happily kept him around for a while. And Albert Wesker....ohhhh yeah, down with that one. I could hardly concentrate on fighting in RE5 because he had to go and get all shirtless on me.

You are so right with the oldness. It doesn't bother me when I'm writing fic, because I tend to make my characters more in the 30's/40's range, but from a personal standpoint it feels like I'm hot for teacher or something. As for Casavir--OLD OWL WELL is all I have to say.

I don't know if I've mentioned this, but I tend to play waaaay on the light/good side of RPGs. But I almost always write fics with evil PCs. I wonder why.

Dragon Age romances actually feature several young, dashing type males to choose from. I know I was shocked.
