this week, whilst procrastinating i watched peaky blinders. it's a bbc drama, set post-wwi with a focus on a street gang led by the shelby family in birmingham. it's really, REALLY good. for one thing it's wonderfully shot and cast, and says a lot of interesting stuff about post-war society in england.
I saw a series of amazing series of posts on tumblr that got me to watch the first episode and I'm hooked, for all the reasons you mentioned.
THE SOUNDTRACK!!!! IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! just trust me.
RIGHT? I am so impressed with period dramas who are able to use modern music flawelessly. It takes a deft touch and a grade A music director.
helen mcrory plays aunt pol, the woman who ran the family's criminal enterprise during the war. she's fabulous in the role and really saves some of the more melodramatic plotlines. she's got such a great spine of steel and i loooooove that's she never lets the boys forget she could outsmart them all on a bad day.
SHE IS SO FABULOUS. I ADORE HER AND TOMMY'S RELATIONSHIP, IT'S AMAZING, AND I LOVE THAT THEY ARE THE TWO CLEARLY RUNNING THE FAMILY.
for one thing cillian murphy is REALLY good as the main character. He's so good. And that scene in the second episode where he calms down the horse? Such a great characterization moment, and it makes so much sense that Grace would fall for him after seeing
( ... )
i've never listened to much nick cave, but i'm definitely checking out some of his other stuff since 'red right hand' is so damn good. ugh, i wish i could say more about it but most of the time it just WORKED without me being super aware of it (as the best soundtracks do).
tommy and pol's relationship is so fascinating, because clearly whilst tommy's been ~the mature one growing up, this change in the power balance between them is fairly new. but he's still so clearly respectful (he listens when she's proposing a strategy!!!!!). and when she's like "you lied to tommy, so i'm never going to forgive you even if he does" to grace and ughhhh 100% into that. 100000% into her being the emotional heavy in their family.
i've never "got" cillian murphy until now, but wooooooow. why am i into that haircut? who knows, but I AM. and i just want to grace to push him down and aggressively be good for him. maybe sex too. okay definitely sex too.

I mean, imagine how you feel about Cillian Murphy with that terrible haircut and add an EXCELLENT HAIRCUT plus GLASSES. I can’t even.
