There is a time for goats, and a time... not for goats?

As of tomorrow my family will be goatless for the foreseeable future. It's rather strange to think about, and I know I shall miss them. I already do, to be honest.

Come next spring it would be seven years we've had a little "Farm". But the decision has been reached by all of us that the era of goats is over. Family members growing up and branching ( Read more... )

Each animal has its own unique personality, don't they? That's always what you miss, despite the work involved.

Thanks! *hug* much appreciated.

Exactly, yes. I miss each one in a different way.

*hugs* Are you selling them, then? Our cows were kind of like that - at a certain point, it just gets to be too much of a hassle.

We've never had goats, and our cows were never that friendly, but we recently just went down to being a one-dog family for the first time since before I was born. Not really the same thing, though, but you get used to it.

*hugs back* Thanks for taking the time to comment on this.

Erg. I wish we we were selling. But as we never disbudded them to keep their horns from growing (thus limiting market value - few people want goats with horns. We never had any problems with the horns, though. Except from the buck... And even he was just roughly playing) and as my family are very much meat eaters... They are ending up in the freezer. :/ It's rather rough. But that's been the understood plan since we began. We still get attached, though. Possibly we wouldn't have, if we had, say, 30 head. But with so few you can get to know each one.

Cows? Interesting. From what I've seen of them they seem a lot more docile and quiet-natured, in general, than goats. And I do see the parallel between narrowing down to one dog and our case - you're so used to have several (?) running about and now there's just one (none, for us).

We have friends who often eat their buck kids, so they name them things like Burrito, Stew... We never tried that, but it probably does help a little.

It's still pretty odd, actually, coming home and not seeing them watching me when I look over at their pen. Every time I open my window shade their pen is right there and I automatically glance over to see what they're up to.

If left up to the kids, pet names can become shockingly cheesy. As evidenced in half our goat names and the names of all the dogs I know... :D Our goats had such names as Genghis, Subred, Winkle (the good ones), Sugar, Bluebell, and Buttercup (the unimaginative ones - though Buttercup came to us all ready named).
